    Hi,

My wife and i need to replace our double mattress and had been considering the follwing option:
    http://www.sleepmasters.co.uk/mattresses/sensaform-cameo-mattress-158.html

Can anyone let me know if it is a good buy at £249.95?
The one we currently have is one i had at home before we got married and is just a standard sprung mattress. We don't know anything about memory foam but this one seemed comfortable, with just the right balance between being firm enough for me, and soft enough for her.
We would be hoping to spend in that region but can up it by a bit if it is worth it.

It's open coil sprung with memory foam, which you can get for much less. So I wouldn't take much notice of the normal price they show.

do you mean the 499 price?
I thought that was probably exaggerated but as the 249 price seemed ok to me thats why i considered it.
We had went to Dreams as well as Sleepmasters but in there the mattresses seemed to be all at least twice the price.
The spec they gave us was 800 pocket springs and v65 memory foam.
How does this compare to the Sleepmasters one?
And what should i be looking for when searching online?
I dont know anything about mattresses so online is hard to do compared with sitting on a bed in the showroom!!!!

I'm trying to just stick to giving general advice on specs rather than commenting on individual models. This is due to the number of paranoid members who accuse me of just slating the competition...sorry

No I meant the £249 price is high for open coil sprung with memory foam.

800 pocket springs is enough, but I normally recommend between 1000 and 1800. V65 foam is good, but make sure it is between 2" and 2.5" deep. If you can't get a turnable mattress then you may be better off going for pocket sprung only.

the problem is the 800 spring one is over £200 more expensive.
Is that what i am going to have to pay for a decent mattress?
Another note is i have a slatted bed and from reading this morning it seems these are not ideal for pocket sprung. Does it really matter?
why does a turnable mattress matter? (although that may be obvious!!)

Pocket sprung mattresses are far more expensive than open coil sprung, although they do give far superior support. However that doesn't mean that open coil sprung aren't any good. There are some very good open coil sprung mattresses.

Open coil sprung mattresses are fine with slatted bases. With pocket sprung mattresses without memory foam on both sides you would need to either add extra slats to close the gaps up to 1", or lay a sheet of peg board (or hard board) over the slats to spread the weight out. If the mattress has memory foam on both sides then they should be ok with gaps of up to 3".

If a mattress can be turned over then it will last far longer as the springs will wear more evenly. Turning isn't as important with open coil springs.
  • so am i likely to get a good pocket sprung memory foam mattress for less than £300?
or should i shop about and look only for open coil memory foam at less than the sleepmasters one i mentioned before?

Unfortunately not. You probably would be better with open coil/memory foam.
  • cheers, ill shop about then for an open coil memory foam with 2-2 1/2" of foam.
    hopefully that should be adequate.
