I'm looking to buy a Pocket Sprung or Memory Foam Mattress.

After reading this thread I feel better informed, largely thanks to Tim Deegan, however it's also beginning to feel like simply buying a good bed at a good price is turning into one of the most complicated decisions I'll ever make!

So I thought I'd summarize where I stand and see what people's opinions are: From what I've read here and seen elsewhere, if you buy any one of the following you will get a very good mattress that will last...some will be a little better and some will be more expensive...

    Vi-sprung
    Warren Evans
    Kozeesleep / Restus
    Kozee sleep
    La Romantica Beds*

(*I've added Romantica Beds knowing what every veteran of this thread knows because everyone who bought via this thread was/is happy with their purchase)

If people would like to comment or add to this list that would be great, it be good if I could use this forum to help me make a better informed decision....

I have just (yesterday) bought a bed and mattress from Warren Evans, which is due to be delivered on March 3rd.

I came across them because of various reviews about them as an ethical business, and where possible I try to support businesses that have or promote similar values to my own.

Having spent months thinking about it (I'm not great at making decisions), I narrowed my choice down to two beds and three mattresses (despite the expense, I know that I would regret buying a non-organic mattress - I have my own reasons for this, and it wasn't up for debate).

Yesterday I went into their Clapham Junction branch, where they were polite and helpful, didn't pressurise me into making decisions, and finally made up my mind.

I will try to remember to come back on here once I have had my delivery and update you both on the experience and my opinion of the bed!

    Update:

Our La Romantica Madrid mattress has just been delivered by the guys from Bedlum Beds and our hard earned ££££££s handed over. The delivery guys were excellent and very polite indeed! We didn't ask them to take it upstairs for us but it's actually a good deal heavier/bulkier than we thought so I'd recommend anyone else getting one of these to allow the experts to do their job rather than risk personal injury :)

Anyway we've had a quick bounce and it feels great, there is a slight chemical smell from the mattress (the foam or even the packaging maybe) but it's not too bad so rather than air it as we'd originally planned we're going to jet the not-so-silentnight Miracoil right now :j and try it tonight.

We'll report back after we've had a night's sleep on it and let you all know what we think - hopefully it won't be at 4.00 am and because we've got backache though...... ;)

Thanks to Tim Deegan and the Bedlum Boys!

    Update #2

(21.45) Just to add. The smell has now gone so it looks like it was just the polythene wrapping. We headed off to our local Dreams store this afternoon to compare it with the non-turn pocket spring plus memory foam mattress we tried a few weeks back. There didn't seem to be a lot in it to be honest - apart from the price which was more than double what we paid for ours. :)

Anyway can't wait to go to bed so I'm off. Sleep well everyone. :)
  • Thanks for your info folks.

Just been out to 'test' beds in our expensive local furniture store. Approached by a snooty lady ready to extol the virtues of ALL their beds, but by the time I'd finished telling her our requirements - 1000 to 1600 pocket springs in a king size, turnable mattress, no encapsulated springs, possible double-sided memory foam, no pillow-tops, no Silentnight, Sealy, Rest Assured or Myers beds, hand-tufted, platform base with 4 drawers - she visibly shied away and asked us to look around then call her when we decided which one we wanted. My husband said she looked bamboozled and realised she wasn't going to be able to 'persuade' us to buy the bed she got most commission on!!!! We were left in peace after that, but didn't see anything we liked (there were an awful lot of Silentnights there).

Slonik - looking forward to reading your appraisal tomorrow!

Mama Mia - thanks for your honest opinion of the HD Ergoflex!

It's personal recommendations of newly bought beds that I'd like to read more of, so that this can be balanced with the advice and information offered on here and help us all buy a bed that isn't a waste of money.
  • Hi I want to buy a mattress for a slatted oak bed which is being sold by Pinesolutions - they offer an option to buy the bed with a choice of mattress.
The one I'm considering has the spec:
1000 individual pocket spring system: each spring is encased in one of 1000 individual pockets.
Tufted panel, 4 layers of filling, suitcase handles, badge and air vents. Firmness rating 3 (scale; 5 is firm and 1 is soft).
Care advice; we recommend that you turn this mattress, do not roll or bend.

Does anyone know if this sounds like a decent mattress just by the spec - we're really only interested in the pocket sprung mattresses.

    Thanks

  • Thought I'd chip in as I've had my mattress two weeks now, and am happier than ever that I used my judgement and bought over the internet. Better spec than in the shops and a heck of a lot cheaper too!

I'm sleeping better than ever, and when my girlfriend stays round, she moans at me that I need to buy her the same mattress for her at her house..! great..!

It's a great shame to see people coming on here, joining up just to shoot down a person who has been around a couple of years offering his free advice.

I've been taken in by the speil before from a certain large Swedish company, but this time round I followed Tim's advice (and most of it is common sense if you think about it..) I tried a few beds out from the 'big' manufacturers, and I also tried out the mattress and bed, in person, which I ended up buying.

    Cheers.

You would need to get them to supply extra slats to close the gaps up to 1" if you are using a pocket sprung mattress on it.
  • OK guys - our first report on the La Romantica Madrid.

Well it's certainly a very different experience, made more so very probably by the fact that what it replaced was so bad! The mattress feels very luxurious and both of us noticed the total lack of spring noise - eerie silence really. The mattress therefore feels solid, substantial and very comforting.

Both of us sleep partially on our fronts/sides and have regularly tended to suffer from pins and needles in the arms during the night - sometimes to a quite frightening degree. Neither of us had that problem last night and that was a very welcome and unexpected side benefit :j

Despite being a 16 stone veritable 'radiator', I didn't get too hot or sweaty although I could feel that the mattress is definitely warmer than the one it replaced. Unlike me, my 9 stone wife feels the cold hugely and found the additional warmth very welcome as we don't have heating on in the bedroom at night. Of course it remains to be seen how things are in the summer - if we ever get one that is.......

Thankfully, my long suffering wife hardly noticed my usual shifting in bed - the spring/memory foam combination really does tend to isolate such movement which again adds to the new experience. Our days of roll together are clearly over and it's a pleasantly surreal experience after so much suffering at the hands of the monstrous Miracoil.

There's evidently a very big difference between lying on a bed in a showroom for a few minutes and actually sleeping on one overnight. So, despite our initial reservations, we feel that not being able to try the actual mattress in a shop before buying isn't a major issue especially given that very similar products are readily available to try in virtually every high street and the suppliers offer a 'try it and see' money back or exchange comfort guarantee.

There is still a very light remaining chemical smell, probably due to our body heat during the night but it's hardly noticeable and I'd expect it to be gone before long.

We can both see it'll take a while to get used to what, for us, is an entirely new sleep system. It's certainly comfortable but the memory foams adds a very new sensory dimension which will probably take a few days to get used to so we'll report back on that in due course.

All in all we're very happy with our purchase so far and would say it's excellent value for money compared with the high street offerings.

    Hi

I decided to buy the 'La romantica' Lovell mattress after reading and researching this thread. I have to say I am not entirely happy with my purchase so far and I was wondering if anybody could possibly help -

I find the mattress very firm and expected it to be softer than it is (it feels soft to sit on then when you lie down as your weight is evenly spread it feels harder)

I don't really feel myself sink into the memory foam very much at all (I am 10.5 stone) The side I have slept on now for 5 nights feels softer than the one I haven't - will this gradually become softer? (and obviously I'll need to rotate the mattress end to end)

I have woken up several times in the night mainly I think due to being too hot and sweating.

I think maybe it's just going to take a little getting used to - and I cannot send it back as it was made to a particular spec. I have a feather down 13.5 tog duvet and egyptian cotton sheets/cover and mattress protector.

I am tonight going to have windows open - and with the freezing temperatures coming our way maybe this will help!!

If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it.
    Thanks

    or Apollo Calypso:

Which is best considering quality and price? I don't want to spend more then £400

    thanks for any help
