Tim,
So what is the criteria for picking a pocket sprung only mattress then. Any brand names come to mind?0 -

Ive got a memory foam topper on top of a foam mattress and it is fine with it.If at first you don't succeed - destroy all evidence that you tried.0 -
Well, you guys are at nearly a hundred pages now, and I've read em all. It's been quite a journey we've all been on, with lots of confusion and frustration, and hopefully some more comfortable nights sleep for some.
I'm on the same search as lots of others here, and have been eagerly lapping up all the advice on offer. Tragically, I'm still a bit stuck. Maybe someone has just one little bit of advice left?
I've got a new slatted bed frame, I believe made by Relyon for House of Fraser, bought before coming to this forum. It's currently got the very modestly priced Jay-Be mattress I've had on it for some years now, and finally my fiancee and I can take it no longer. It's time for a new mattress.
I think I've plumped for a pocket sprung, without any foam, on account of being wrigglers (changing position can be annoying I believe, and we also use a heated mattress pad on account of having a very cold house).
I get it that Firm isn't any particular benefit to a sore back with a Pocket Sprung mattress. I'm about 12 stone (before dinner), and the other occupant of the bed about 8 - she likes a slightly softer mattress, so we're thinking "Medium firmness".
Budget is a fairly healthy £700. We very nearly fell into buying a Relyon mattress from House of Fraser, which was massively reduced by 50%, to exactly the same price that you can buy it on the internet all of the time. I think we've already covered how RRP's are nonsense haven't we?
I hear that the clever money follows the small brand names, and avoids the big chain and department stores. Only problem is, finding out the names of the small manufacturers! I've found prescious few, often miles away from me in the Peoples Republic of South Yorkshire. I came across HealthBeds (via Revival), Warren Evans and Norris Bedding.
Is it possible for anyone to name some other small mattress manufacturers that might be able to help? Perhaps some of you have come across the names above and can comment?
One name that looms large in these pages is of course, the venerable Tim Deegan. Given the amount of time you kindly dedicate to this forum, I'm sure you'll come across this post. I understand the slightly difficult position you are in, so perhaps you can avoid suggesting the names of any manufacturers you sell? Perhaps this way you can ensure you don't suffer the slings and arrows suggesting your partiality in this matter? I am already considering the manufacturer I would guess you'd recommend, but am keen to find out some other avenues...
Many thanks in advance for any help or observations anyone is able to offer, and those of you who regularly offer advice to the rest of us (uncomfortably) in the dark, pat yourselves on the back - you're doing a grand job.

You can use pegboard, the little holes all over will allow air to circulate.0 -

Sent for DH who agreed but slightly favoured the Pucccini.
Did an internet search and did find the Argos one and was tempted but did find a difference in the feel of the lower spring count ones in Dreams (similar I think to the Puccini and the Sicily.
Sicily was over budget and I didn't want to buy from Dreams anyway as the salesman had chased us round the shop, so had a look on line. From what I can work out it is pretty much the same as the Essence 2600 Pocket and Latex. Found a place on line which has done it for £972 for the Superking Divan with 4 drawers which worked out nearly £300 cheaper than Dreams so decided to go for it.
It's still on order so I'm not able to tell you what it is actually like unfortunately. I nearly didn't buy it as saw the stuff on Rest Assured and no turn mattresses on here but we both find it significantly more comfortable than the others we tried to decided to go for it - time will tell if it was the correct decision I guess.

What a coincidence! The only thing putting me off any of these beds is the fact they're non turn. I believe the turn ones last a good few years longer, but i've yet to come across a pocket sprung latex turn mattressDid you come across any whilst trawling the shops/net?? Has anyone found a pocket sprung w/latex layer that can be turned? Is a plain pocket sprung much cheaper? Can you buy latex toppers the same way you can w/memory foam?
I decided against the Essence as it has pillow top, so want either the Puccini or Bellini. A site, www.bedstar.co.uk will do the Bellini 2000 for £930 w/4 draws, or the Puccini 1400 for £800.
Were you able to find out the model of the ones on Argos? We've a lil one on the way so £650 would be alot better suited to our budget. This offer is only on until Friday so i'm feeling very pressured to make a decision!!
Where was it that you eventually bought from?
Can anyone recommend a Superking, pocket sprung, latex layer divan bed for under £700? A model name or retailer would be such a great help. I'm just absolutely sick of looking at beds now!!0 -
I have done that, but in all honesty I do not have time to read all of them.
What I find absolutely amazing is that if I Google "silent night complaints" or "rest assured complaints" I get nothing ... just to test the theory if I Google "dreams complants" or "land of leather complaints" I get loads of hits ???
As I said before, I respect your opinion but would like to hear of some factual accounts of problems with Sealy/Rest Assured particulaly those complaints regarding pocket sprung mattresses rather than Miracoil.
I wouldn't gain in any way at all from the advice I am giving you as you are in Northern Ireland, I am just trying to help by passing on my knowledge. So it's obviously up to you if you accept my advice or not.
You can search the forum for actual posts rather than whole threads. Also, does anyone know of any tests done to show wether using a sprung base with a pocket sprung mattress does any good other than making it feel a bit softer or is adding a cheap soring system below an expensive mattress a waste of time (or worse).
As you may have gathered, I like to deal in facts, not hearsay.
Some retailers will try to tell you that a sprung base will make a mattress last longer, but that's because they want you to spend more. The facts are that a sprung base will make your mattress feel a little softer and a little more luxurious. If you like a firm bed then there is no point in paying the extra for a sprung base.0 -
mattersdorff wrote: »would the La Romantica Madrid work on a bed frame with slat gaps of 3.5"????
perhaps I need to look into buying more slats or an entirely new bed frame.... mine is a crappy Osaka frame from Argos anyway so I'm not loosing much if I replace it.
thoughts?
It would work, but it won't last as long. You can add extra slats, or lay a sheet of peg board over the existing ones to spread the weight out.0 -

This is why peg board is better, but it isn't essential as a platform top divan base doesn't have holes in it.
Remember proper mattresses usually have air vents in the side.0 -
Tim_Deegan wrote: »I wouldn't use chip board as it isn't flexible enough. Peg board (hard board with loads of holes in it) would be best and would be cheaper than chip board. Or if you can't get peg board then hard board is fine.
So would you recommend I replace my chipboard then Tim ?
Need to find somewhere that sells peg board - is it a B&Q thing ?
CheersIf at first you don't succeed - destroy all evidence that you tried.0
