Just checked again and in the description of the mattress they say it is suitable to be used with THEIR slatted base beds. better ring them tomorrow I think.

EDIT: could we not just put some pegboard on the base?

Hi - The article I read suggested light boarding with ventilation holes to get around the problem.
I saw it said 'THEIR' but just assumed they wouldn't ever guide you to a product apart from their own. It would be interesting to know whether their slats are closer together than ordinary spacing.
Sorry I was the bearer of bad news but hopefully now you know, you can get around it. Very handy to have Tim, a very helpful person, to guide us.

JL shouldn't be telling you that you can use a turnable pocket sprung mattress on a slatted base.

The reason for this is because each spring works independently, and will try and push between the slats if they are more than 1" apart. This will obviously damage the springs.

If the mattress is non turn then they sometimes have a hard layer that stops the springs pushing between the slats. But as you say the mattress won't last as long if you can't turn it.

JL might not be a big brand in beds, but they are still a huge retail outlet who try and fine every possible way to cut costs in order to increase profits.

Maypole, you didn't say you were using it on a slatted base. I would cancel your order immediately.

That's great Tim - thanks very much for the guidance. I guess with the spring count of 525 on a double you get what you pay for, even if short of your guidance level of min 800 on a king size.
    Thanks again.

Yes, Tim is really good. Best to be armed with knowledge when you buy.

I measured the gap between the slats in our spare bedstead, 5 INCHES  this pine bed was made years ago by a local joiner and we had not even thought about the width between the slats, the mattress on now is a coil spring, but old cheap and awful.

I will still contact JL to ask them about it.

Tim, actually, it was Fenwicks of Newcastle said that their mattresses could be used on a slatted base, sorry. I then just assumed this when I went in to JL. They had the mattress I bought displayed on a sprung slatted base:confused: .

Yes you can use peg board, or add extra slats.

I just read this post. If the gap is 5" then I'd add extra slats if it's possible.

I wouldn't rely too much on what the sales assistants tell you. Although they may be better than those in stores like Dreams, I doubt they still know that much about the products they sell.

I didn't know you had written a guide, however I did read up on it on the internet and the density and thickness of memory foam seemed good. Plus with all the positive feedback I thought it would be okay. It seems that I am in the exception in not liking it as going by his feedback most people seem to love it. I can't see the feedback saying it isn't as described, could you possibly put up the link to it please?

I hear what you're saying about £235 being too cheap, but we really can't afford to spend any more than that, especially after loosing our money on ebay, so I just want to get the best we can afford for our money even if we have to replace it in a few years.

I have posted this a few times on MSE:

I know that many people are very wary about buying items like beds and mattresses from ebay. However if you follow a few guidelines then you can save up to 75% on the shop prices:

    1) most important of all make sure that the seller gives a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

    2) check previous feedback for the seller, and even contact previous customers to ask them about the seller. Also read all their negative or neutral feedback.

    3) make sure they have recent feedback (unused accounts with good feedback are sometimes hacked).

    4) make sure most of their feedback is for selling, and that it is for similar items to those you want to purchase

    5) use a company who display their phone number, so that you can talk to someone about your requirements (they want you to make the right choice because it will cost them if you return it).

    6) check the sellers return policy. Many sellers charge for postage on returns.....can work out very expensive if you have unpacked a vacuum packed mattress, and you don't like it.

    7) try to use a seller who delivers using their own transport. Couriers often damage or misplace goods (believe me I know from experience).

Obviously you can't try before you buy, but for the saving it is worth the risk if you follow the guidelines above.

Where exactly did you read up about density and depth of the memory foam?

If you read the listing for the mattress you will see that a great deal of the info is wrong. To start with it says 'the higher the density the better'. This is actually far from the truth, and is one of the reasons why Tempur came out bottom in the Which Magazone report. The optimum density is 60 to 70kg per m3. This mattress is 75kg which can actually make it difficult to change position.

The depth of the memory foam on this mattress is 3" which is actually too deep, with the optimum being 2", but no more than 2.5". If the memory foam is too deep it will engulf you making you too hot. It will also make it difficult to change position.

There has been a couple of other MSE members who have also given this mattress a poor review.

As for ebay feedback, it is usually left within a day or so of the mattress being delivered, and therefore doesn't give a true representation of what the mattress is like to sleep on long term. For this reason I have even seen high positive feedback for fake memory foam mattresses. Did you read all the negative and neutral feedback, or were you just impressed by the positive?

Can you unzip the cover and make sre that there are two layers of foam inside it.

We have decided to add extra slats.
I also emailed John Lewis and am waiting for a reply.
  • Thanks for posting your guide. I'm not sure as to where I read up on the memory foam, i looked at quite a lot of different sites though. I did read the seller's feedback but he only has one negative feedback and a couple of neutral out of all those positives which seemed pretty good going to me.

I've unzipped the cover and there are two layers of foam, the memory foam layer is 3 inches. However the mattress actually measures 9" in height and not 10" as stated in the auction.

If it is definately only 9" then you can return it at the sellers cost because it isn't as advertised. e-mail the supplier and give them 1 week to respond. If they don't then start a dispute.

Does it have a Highland label on it?

The seller actually has 21 negative and 43 neutrals over the last 12 months.....allways read the negatives.
