Hi Tim/anyone else who can help,
I am in need of a new mattress, and have been researching them for the past three weeks. I then stumbled across this forum, and have spent the last two days solidly through this forum for help and advice on a new mattress. I now require your assistance, if I may be so bold!
First I looked into a memory foam and reflex foam combo - The Breasley Flexcell New Generation 20, tried it in store and it seemed comfortable, but then was told about it may get too hot at night, and apparently they are no good for night time activities either LOL!!
Then after reading this forum I saw your recommendation that the best mattress is a combo of memory foam and pocket springs. So I went to a few other shops to look at those. The most comfy one I could find, (I like softer rather than firmer feeling mattresses), in the shops was from Bensons, see link below:
http://www.bensonsforbeds.co.uk/Mattresses/Double/Memory_Foam_Advanced_1250_Double_Mattress;604.aspx
This one goes for £474.99 in a double, and seems to have the correct amount of memory foam 50mm (2inches appx) and pocket springs, but what do you think Tim, is it a good buy for the price? Good quality? If not can you please recommend something else around the similar price and spec that I can find in the shops?
I have seen others online that seem better quality, but I can’t bring myself to pay good money for something as important as this, without first trying it out for how it feels! For that matter what does anyone else think of my stance on this? Has anyone tried buying a mattress online, untested, and found it ok, or were there problems with returning an unwanted mattress?
Your views would be most appreciated!0 -

Well even at £1500 you would be paying double what the bed is worth.
To be honest if you are buying a Vi-Spring from an expensive store, then Money Saving Expert is the wrong place to ask for advice, because they saw you coming.0 -

To start with, stay well away from the big chain stores.
This mattress is the type with smaller than normal pocket springs, that are surrounded by reflex foam. This can cause the same overheating problem as a reflex foam/memory foam mattress. The fact that is contains small pocket springs means that it doesn't give the same support that one with full size pocket springs would. Normally this type of mattress would sell for much less than this.
If possible go for one that is two sided otherwise the mattress won't last as long. However to buy one in a shop could be very expensive, but to buy one on line would be a similar price to the Bensons one.
As for buying on line, just check the sellers return policy, and if you are still unsure, then call them.0 -
Cheers for that Tim,
Good to hear an outsiders view on this mattress, as I only have my view and the biased shopkeepers view to go on!
I will def call up and ask about the return policy.
I have seen some double sided ones online for similar prices - La Romantica Venice for example. Does this mattress have the full size pocket springs?
Cheers again for your help!0 -

You can usually tell the ones that have the smaller pocket springs, because they usually have a flat top on the mattress, but the ones with full size pocket springs are usually hand tufted.0 -
Cheers, I will look out for that!0

Hi Tim
I'm considering the La Romantica Madrid double mattress (to replace current mattress on existing divan) but have also seen the following:
http://www.mattress24.co.uk/product/Joseph_Eclipse_Pocket_Mattress-299
http://www.mattress24.co.uk/product/Caress_Dream_mattress-179
http://www.mattress24.co.uk/product.php?id=1
I realise they are not double sided like the Madrid but the price differentials makes them appealling.
What do you think of these and do you think the Madrid is sufficiently superior to these to warrant the additional cost?
Regards

You will also find cheaper on line than you will in the shops (even in the sales).
Hi Tim, thank you for your response. Have actually bought from a local chap who will take the old mattress away. I bought a Dorlux Bronze Ribbon for £144. I see I could have got for about £120 online but would have had to dispose of the old mattress. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this one is not one that makes you groan and say Oh No!
Thanks for your advice

Hi, Have read with interest much of this forum having realised that our existing mattress is about to give up the ghost (as is the bed) I had tentatively decided that the La Romantica Charlotte may be the one (king size) but came across the Sultan Hamno at Ikea which seems to fit the bill and was wondering if anyone had an opinion on it? According to the website it has 151 springs /sq.metre and is 28cm thick, I am presuming king size would have to be 160/200?
Thanks
By the way, the mattress will be put on a slatted base rather than on a divan.0
