Thanks Tim. Better to go for the 1000 spring Kozee with memory foam or the 1500 pocket springs only?
Thanks for all your help on this thread. Nice for people to be able to get good solid advice on these things.

Personally I'd go for a smaller independent manufacturer, and if you are going for pocket sprung with memory foam or pocket sprung only, then try and go for a two sided one.

How firm did you want your mattress?

Medium to firm. Both the wife and I have (not really bad) but bad enough backs to want a good supporting mattress and bed. I find with firm beds (like the one i am borrowing) i just sleep on top of it, not supported by it and it is doing my rugby ravaged back no good at all.
Who do you, or can you recommened? I thoght Kozee were relatively small brew. Finding a 2 sided mattress now seems nearly impossible with the "revolutionary no turn mattress" everywhere i look.

I'm afraid I'm not allowed to recommend any brands.

Kozeesleep are the UK's largest independent bed manufacturer, and although they are independent, they are still as big as some of the well known brands.

There is nothing revolutionary about non turn mattresses. It is just a way to cut production costs, but they won't last as long.

Could you PM with a recommendation?
I was joking about the revolution bit. It is the same as the vacuum packed mattresses, not for the consumer at all.

Without recommending any one company, could you name a few small independant companies for me?

I'm afraid I can't recommend anything on MSE.
    Try googling it.
  • Hello,
Thought I'd join this thread rather than start a new one - hope that's ok. We bought a bedframe + mattress from an Ebay shop, it was a discontinued frame, listed as £170 for the frame with standard mattress. I know this is really cheap, but we don't have much money and it took a while to save up this much, after having to sleep on the floor for the last couple of months after our last bed broke. Anyway, there was a choice of various upgrades for the mattress, so I paid an extra £60 for a 'luxury damask orthopaedic mattress'.

I know this is still cheap so wasn't expecting a brilliant mattress, but it's so uncomfortable, I'm gutted. We've only slept in it 3 nights but have both (my partner and I, both of us fit and healthy with no back probs) woken up with back ache after sleeping in it, and I really can't face getting back in it tonight! The label says it's a 'deep sleep Mayfair semi-ortho' - it looks ok but is just too soft, it sinks loads when you sit on it, and when there are 2 of you lying in it, it dips really badly in the middle.

Is there anything I can do to rescue it? Some kind of topper or something? I know it's my fault for buying without trying it out first, and I doubt if it's faulty so don't think I can send it back now we've slept in it. I'm just devastated at the thought of having to throw it out and spend a fortune on a new mattress, but I think we will have to. I'm 6 months pregnant too so it's not like it's going to get any comfier!

Any advice/recomendations for a cheap new mattress appreciated!

Do you have the ebay item number?

How long is it since it was delivered?
  • Hi Tim,
The item number was 310105603909 but it doesn't really say much about the mattress. (The seller seemed fine when I spoke to them before ordering and has good feedback so I don't want to complain about them on a public forum though)

It was delivered on Friday so only 4 days ago.

If the mattress is so uncomfortable then there could be a fault with it.

You also described it as semi ortho. I presume it is an open coil sprung mattress, so any open coil sprung mattress that is described as 'ortho' would be either medium to firm or firm. However if it feels soft then the item is not as described, so you have a right to an exchange or a refund.

Have a look at their mattresses here: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Quality-Discount-Furniture_W0QQfrsrcZ1QQfsubZ13QQtZkm and see if you can see the same model.

You say they have good feedback, but I don't regard 2 negatives and 10 neutrals within 12 months as being good feedback.

You are entitled to a bed that is as described. So send them an e-mail via ebay, then back it up with a phone call today. If they are as reasonable as you say then I'm sure they will replace the mattress with one that is actually orthopaedic.
