Which mattress? (merged threads)

I have tried a 1000 and a 1400 in Dreams and didn't notice any difference to be honest. So the fact it is a 1000 isn't really a problem for me, and I guess it's the same as the Madrid you offer in all respects.
So for £340 delivered for what you offer for £474 delivered I can't go wrong really.
I would also like to thank you Tim for all the knowledge and advice you have offered in your posts, I have learnt a great deal from you so thanks very much. I would point anyone in your direction but if that bed hadn't come up at that price for me I wouldn't hesitate to purchase a bed from yourself.
I am also awaiting a new bed frame in the new year so the mattress will be going on the floor for the time being. Any advice on keeping it clean? I was thinking to just leave the plastic sheet or an old bed sheet on the underside and use a mattress protector on the top.
Cheers
The Calypso isn't the same spec that it used to be, and is no longer to the same spec as the Madrid. One way you can notice this is because the Calypso has now lost an inch in depth (it used to be 11" but is now 10").
I think as long as the floor is clean before the mattress goes down, and like you say you lay a sheet under it, you shouldn't have any problems.
I'd just like to now confirm that the Calypso is no longer two sided like it used to be. This would account for the reduction in depth.0 -
But is the Madrid worth £70 over the Calypso (both at full price)?
Would the 1" difference be noticeable?
If the Madrid from a 'well known seller' was £415 delivered on eBay I would have been happy to snap it up, but money talks as they say.
£70 can now buy me 2 decent pillows or a duvet set etc.
Any suggestions for a budget king size bed frame?0 -
Sorry, quite long first post, please forgive!
Hi, I am a newbie but have been using MSE for some time and have been eyeing up this thread like an eagle over the last week. I haven't quite managed to read every page I'm afraid but today alone I have read about 60 pages of it and been online all day researching mattresses (I should be writing an assignment for Friday, but as my partner has vowed to sleep on the floor til we get a new mattress as ours is so hideous, I have prioritised mattress shopping!) I am so grateful for all the pearls of wisdom, especially yours Tim, I do think it's great that you would advise for free.
Our mattress was donated to us as an unwanted gift in August this year, still in its plastic. I've traced it back to Argos, it's an airsprung. Every spring has sprung and we are both riddled with pain and are being scooped unwillingly into the centre of the bed. The divan base was also a donation and is a rather flimsy affair, but I can't afford to replace that at the moment.
So, I know I should look for the following:
Pocket sprung about 1000 for a double (4,6')
no more than 2.5" memory foam, no less than 2 I think.
Not sleepeze, searly or slumberland (or something like that).
Turnable and pref double sided.
Independents if poss.
We both prefer firmer mattresses, really really firm, but I'm getting the impression that a medium pocket sprung with memory firm gives a firm feel, is that right?
I know there has been lots of other advice but I have gone into mattress meltdown, and with the likelihood being that I will be sleeping on the floor for several more weeks if I go with an Indie, I have been trying to find something that fits those criteria on the next day websites.
I'm also a bit confused as to why Tim is adamant that more than 2.4 memory foam is a no-no, where as the memoryfoammattressco think that the whole matress should be memory foam and the thicker the better, with no springs. Is it all just a matter of opinion? I see Tim does sell whole foam mattresses and no turn matresses, but I gues he has to cater to all tastes and just try to advise.
Here are some mattresses I would be grateful to be advised about. please bear in mind that budget and expedience are my biggest issues, of course long-term health as well. If one company is a bit less brilliant than the next, but this is reflected in price, I'm not so bothered about that!
http://www.bestpricebeds.co.uk/product_display.asp?id=1748 not sure if two sided
http://www.mattressnextday.co.uk/mattress/466/Pocket-Ortho-Reflex-2000/ this just looks v good vfm and ticks a good few boxes (can't tell if turnable so assume so) Think this is the one I am most inclined towards financially etc, but await being told off!!
http://www.bedlum-beds.co.uk/product/La-ROMANTICA-Lovell-Pocket-Sprung-and-Memory-Foam-Double-Mattress.-318.00/ but this isn't two-sided - I know you can't advise here Tim
http://www.mattressnextday.co.uk/mattress/461/Richmond-1000-Pocket/ - it's not memory foam but does say not entry level pocket sprung and so good for the price??? Plus it's West country so thinking loyalty to my region lol!! Any thoughts on Richmond mattresses?
http://www.mattressonline.co.uk/products/postureform_deluxe.html again, I know this flaunts all the golden rules, but I was intrigued by the no moving parts means it last longer, and it is a very cheap price??
So sorry for the extraordinarily long post, i would be very grateful though for any advice at all. Maybe, having seen the confusion I am in, and the budget i am working within, you can recommend something that ticks all my boxes (speed of delivery, finance, comfort)?
Also, sorry to lower the tone but I think it's relevant and others may want to know.... given the no noise aspect of no springs, am I right to suspect that a healthy sex life might lead to tortured springs in sprung mattresses? Or are mattresses sensibly built with this in mind, lol!!!?
All the best, and thanks for having me0 -
It really is a minefield.
I'm also confused about the difference between memory foam as a top layer on the mattress (both sides) or as a filling as it appears to be on the more mainstream sites?
Many thank0 -

This is exactly why you have to be very wary about who you buy from. The memory foam is there to mould to your body and nothing else. 2" is enough to do this, so if it is any deeper then you will be engulfed, become too hot, and have trouble turning. However many retailers will tell you the more memory foam the better because they charge more for it.
The reason they say no springs are better is because they are cheaper to manufacture, and cheaper to transport, as they often come vacuum packed and rolled up. If you want me to explain why springs and memory foam are better I will?danuiseult wrote: »Also, sorry to lower the tone but I think it's relevant and others may want to know.... given the no noise aspect of no springs, am I right to suspect that a healthy sex life might lead to tortured springs in sprung mattresses? Sprung mattresses have been designed to withstand active night time activities for over 100 years.:rotfl:0 -

Memory foam is usually only on the top of the mattress. This is because it is the most expensive part of the mattress, so it is cheaper to put it on one side only. They will then tell you that it is a non turn mattress, but they simply won't last as long as a two sided mattress.
Memory foam is never used in the middle of the mattress as a filling.0 -
Thank you so much, Tim for your time and clarification! Back to the drawing board then as I've been avidly looking for pocket sprung with memory foam, now I think perhaps I need medium to firm tufted for the firmness, though I do like the idea of the moulding to your body of the memory foam.
Hmm, a bit clearer though still confused as so much choice out there!
I think, though, that I have a better plan of attack, and hope that I don't spend many more days perusing the internet for the ideal mattress!0 -
I have seen a lot of discussion about the La Romantica Madrid mattress, but what do you get for the extra £60 and 1500 springs of the La Romantica Venice?
I see the Venice is listed as 'Medium' whereas the Madrid is 'Medium-firm'. Does this mean the Venice will be more supportive because the 'Medium' will adapt a little more to your body shape/weight?0 -
Is the "Kozee Sleep Duchess" a good one?0
