  • Can someone please advise why not a seperate pocket sprung mattress and a memory foam topper?
Would this not allow the mattress to be turned and used both sides?
It would then be possible to remove memory foam in the summer if too warm.
They seem to be available in the recommended 2" 60kg/m3

If you already have a mattress in good condition, and you want to try out memory foam, then a topper is ok. However manufacturers spend a lot of time and money on developing mattresses, and making sure that all the components work well together. Using a topper is like buying an add on accessory that wasn't designed for the original mattress, and you will be using it on top of the mattresses existing quilting (which won't allow the memory foam or the mattress to work properly).

I have spoken to many people who first of all tried a topper, and now have a mattress with the memory foam built in. All of them say that it is far better with it built in.

I think it's just because the quality is usually poorer on the toppers. If you can find a topper that is the right spec I dont see why not  you can, of course, buy memory foam pocket sprung beds that are double sided thus not needing to worry about changing the topper when flipping the mattress and this will also spread the wear...

The above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. Please don't be offended if that opinion differs from yours, but feel free to click the 'Thanks' button if it's at all helpful!
  • Also, the 'too warm' issue some have raised is a slight worry.
To be honest, I'm keen to try memory foam and will probably have to agree to stump up for another mattress if it turns out a mistake.
Whilst there are double sided memory foam mattress' available, there seems to be alot more choice that are single sided.
  • Ooops, it missed off the first part of my reply.

    Thanks for the speedy replies.
My main concern is we have never used memory foam, and if it is built in,it is an expensive way to find it is not for us.

    Hello all :)
    I've found a couple of possibles? - I think!
I did want a soft bed, but it's sooo hard to find one in my price range, so I'll maybe settle for a med! ( maybe I could use a topper if I need softer?)
I've been advised that I need to look for pocket springs, but is there any other type of mattress I should be trying to find?
But I don't want memory foam as from what I've read it could make me too warm:)
I'd be grateful for any thoughts on these!

There are some sellers who give a satisfaction guarantee which takes the risk out of it.

As for the heat factor, this is another reason why mattresses with the memory foam built in are better than using a topper. With a topper there is a deep layer of quilting stopping the heat dissipating into the air circulating in the spring layer.

As long as the memory foam is 2" deep, and it is a compination of springs and memory foam, then you shouldn't have a heat problem. I personally don't find mine any warmer than my old open coil sprung mattress.

The Buckingham is the Restus entry level pocket sprung and is medium rather than soft.

This one is open coil sprung, so is unlikely to be softer than medium (otherwise it would curve your spine).

This one is also medium. It doesn't say the make, so I would ask if I were you.

Stay clear of this one. It is a pillow top mattress and is therefore non turn.
  • Hi, I've just registered on this forum after trying to find out some info about mattresses. Apologies if my questions have already been answered, but I haven't got the time to read all of this thread yet as I'm at work.
I have a Superking size bed with a Dorlux mattress which didn't last very long. It was bought from Bensons for beds about 3 years ago. Unfortunately the mattress got lumpy and saggy pretty quickly, but we put up with it. After getting in touch with Dorlux it turns out it is still just within its warrenty and we are entitled to replace it for £80. However, I'd rather not get the same mattress again, so am hoping we can upgrade. The range of king size matresses is here- http://www.bensonsforbeds.co.uk/Mattresses/SuperKing.aspx
I think the one we have is the Avalon, but as there is only 1 more expensive Dorlux,(we would need to replace it with the same make) would it be worth getting that one instead, and paying the extra? Or should we get the same one for £80, make do for a while, and then buy a decent one in the near(ish) future? (such as a pocket sprung memory foam mattress.
    Thanks.
  • I have just put my order through today ;-)

Having tried out various beds in Dreams and other bed shops I can confirm that a pocket sprung mattress with a memory foam topping was the most comfortable.

Having read a number of reviews regarding the 'La Romantica Madrid' mattress I was going to order this here:
    http://www.bedlum-beds.co.uk/product/LA-ROMANTICA-Madrid-Memory-Foam-and-Pocket-Sprung-King-Size-Mattress.-439.00/

which would have been £474 delivered for a 5' King Size

I have also read reviews of a mattress called an 'Apollo Calypso' which I actually believe is the supplier to 'La Romantica' as the specs are exactly the same.

Anyway as I have a 15% eBay voucher to use by Friday I thought now would be a good time to buy.

So I have just bought this 5' King Size mattress:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260250916153

The listing was incorrect and is actually a 1500 mattress as per 'Apollo Calypso' spec. This was the cheapest I found the mattress as other sellers seem to be selling it for £470 delivered for the King Size.

So it has actually cost me:

    Mattress £380
    Delivery £35
    15% Discount (excluding delivery) -£57
    AMEX 5% cashback -£17.90

    = £340.10

I also benefit from the exchange rate using my AMEX so will actually be around £330.
