  • Hi tim, i hope that is a good startled blue thing and not a horrified startled blue thing. !!!! It wasn't online, I went to John Lewis to generally bounceabout on beds a just liked it and bought it!

is the mattress, but it comes with a divan base too and a headbroard. It IS a lot of money. (sigh) I probably ballsed the whole thing up again......

The spring count is far too high. The springs have to be so small to fit so many in the mattress that they get damaged easily. The price is also very high for an own brand bed.

AS for the different foams, I prefer visco elastic, but that's just mey personal choice.

Thanks Tim for your reply, I should have mentioned that it was a superking we are after so would you still say that 2200 pocket springs is too many? They do an 1800 version which we could look at then, although at £1500 you would still say that this was a very high price i guess (includes 4 drawers)?!

    We also looked at this
    http://www.furniturevillage.co.uk/bedrooms/divanbedsandmattresses/sleepeezeevancouver

which only has 1000 springs on the 5ft size and costs £1099 with the 4 drawers that we are after. It is a sleepeezee though so i'm not sure of this brand. The lady at Bensons beds turned her nose up but then she was trying to sell us the Relyon! She said there were huge differences in quality.

I have been reading your threads though and obviously you get a lot more for your money by buying online. I am happy to shop online but am just wary of buying a bed without trying it - my question would be that with the memory foam (or latex), is there less of a difference/gamble in terms of hardness etc than with the more traditional mattresses. Both the bensons and furniture village beds didnt have hardnesses so are they fairly standard and we would be safe in terms of comfort buying a bed such as the Madrid that you have? I dont like the bounce of sprung bases so would be getting a hard flat one.

We wouldnt be using any 0% finance offers so it seems silly to pay extra for that obviously. My main priority is getting a decent bed, so although i dont want to pay over the odss, if a £1500 was better than a £700 online one i would be happy to pay that.

Is there an optimum height of mattress, i know you said a 2-2.5" foam was the best. There also seem to be so many different types of that with everyone saying theirs was the best so not sure how you judge that quality either? You say you prefer visco to latex, is there much difference?

Sorry for so many questions but i am just so muddled about all this!!

Many thanks Tim for all your help.

Also, just looking at the Madrid, Bedlum beds seems to be quite good value and their website is ok, does anyone have any opinion about their service and products?
    many thanks
  • Ok, I've seen a bed in a local shop.

It's a Myers Sculpture mattress only. Memory foam (about 2.5 inches) and coil springs (only 650). Very comfortable, could have gone to sleep in the shop.

    Kingsize with delivery £450.

I have seen it a touch cheaper on the internet, but the guy in the shop was genuine, no pressure, and he's a local independant man and a lot more knowledgable than Benson's etc, so I think it's only right to go with him.

Going to put a deposit down and get the bed (hopefully) next week. I don't think I'm being ripped off, and I walked out happy with the comfort of the bed.

Hopefully I will be able to recommend this mattress after I fully tested it.

I got the Romantica Venice and am very happy so far. Have lots of bony problems but look forward to getting into bed now, before I used to dread it. May I also suggest if you're going to have a lovely bed don't scrimp on the mattress protector or your sheets etc- do the whole lovely bedtime thing.
  • Betcha everyone's HOPING so :o

This is the one I'm now going for. Now, it's not the fabulous looking one from Bensons (see earlier post) BUT I've searched and searched and searched and Tim's heart must be ROASTED with me by now. Oh, and the shop (can't remember the name but it's attached to this website) can deliver tomorrow. All of that, coupled with the fact that we're heading for a pretty severe downturn in fortunes I've decided to be a bit more frugal.

The biggest reason I was going for the Bensons one was I was getting 2 years interest free. I'm now sure I'm not cut out for new fangled mattresses (latex, memory foam, sprung base, etc). Thanks to Tim mainly, I know my pocket sprung system is good, I know the 1100 spring count is good and I know Kozeesleep is a decent enough make.

I'm going to do a separate post in a minute (when the boss isn't looking - even though I'm on lunch) about Tim in particular (and his company)
    Grocery Challenge M: £450/£425.08 A: £400/£.May -£400/£361 June £380/£230 (pages 18 & 27 explain)

Did you manage to find any Romantica beds in shops to try out? i'm just worried about buying without trying. Also, is the Venice softer than the Madrid do you know as we'd like a medium to firm mattress?

    Thanks!

Hi Keelyann- no didn't get a chance to try the bed. It felt quite uncharacteristic almost throwing caution to the wind. Our bed had reached I feel crisis point and couldn't cope at all- I spent a bit of time lurking around this thread and getting valuable information from the very useful Tim and others.
I couldn't face spending hours trawling around bed shops and hopping on and off beds with the misguided notion that it would make any difference to my decision. I think you do have to spend more than 10 mins on something, if you're hoping to be in it for 6-8 hours nightly for up to 10 years!
We've had ours for a fortnight or so and are happy so far and hopefully that won't change. Purchasing anything appears to have a certain element of chance with it where ever you get it from.

I think that the Madrid has a few less springs from what I remember and if I have it around the right way that makes it firmer....

    Good luck with your shopping

As in I think you are right, the Madrid is firmer than the Venice.
