Which mattress? (merged threads)

Hi
I have been lurking on this thread for weeks now while I have been investigating what bed and mattress to buy and I think I have just managed to confuse myself where mattresses are concerned.
I have finally taken the plunge and bought a king size leather bed with 'full metal construction and wooden sprung slats.'
I know it is probably a stupid question but am i right in thinking that any king size mattress will fit on the base regardless of whether it is designed for a bedstead or a divan bed. The dimensions of the bed are:
Headboard height 34.5"
Footboard height 12.5"
Width 65"
Length 87"
Any help with deciding what sort of mattress, or which supplier to go with, would be greatly appreciated.£2008 for 2008 club member 3360 -

I'm afraid it was a horrified face.
The base should be no more than £200, and even a really fancy headboard shouldn't be more than £100. With Vi-Spring you pay a lot of money for a name I'm afraid.0 -
Thank you tim. I have appreciated everything you have said on this board and read most of it! I guess it is expensive!
I have thought it over though, and I think that I won't back out of the deal even though I could, as I would have to start research again, the horror! I will just have to sell extra stuff on ebay to pay for it!
At least the endless bed themed research is over for me.
Good luck all of you who are still looking. I wish I had some expertise to offer here like tim does. (anyone who wants to know anything about children with SEN, that's my area!)0 -
Having read virtually all of this thread I decided to register and seek the wisdom of our resident expert!
I have just ordered a Feather & Black Tosca bedframe @ over £300 off list price and wanted an opinion on their mattresses. Having spent more than was originally intended on the frame (despite discount) I'm thinking of their Shelley mattress. 1000 pocket springs on a turnable mattress for £360. I'd appreciate any input you have.0 -
Thanks Tim for your reply, I should have mentioned that it was a superking we are after so would you still say that 2200 pocket springs is too many? They do an 1800 version which we could look at then, although at £1500 you would still say that this was a very high price i guess (includes 4 drawers)?!
The 2200 should be for a king size not the super king size.We also looked at this
http://www.furniturevillage.co.uk/bedrooms/divanbedsandmattresses/sleepeezeevancouver
which only has 1000 springs on the 5ft size and costs £1099 with the 4 drawers that we are after. It is a sleepeezee though so i'm not sure of this brand. The lady at Bensons beds turned her nose up but then she was trying to sell us the Relyon! She said there were huge differences in quality.
Yet again, over priced. Also Relyon are far better quality than Sleepeezee.I have been reading your threads though and obviously you get a lot more for your money by buying online. I am happy to shop online but am just wary of buying a bed without trying it - my question would be that with the memory foam (or latex), is there less of a difference/gamble in terms of hardness etc than with the more traditional mattresses. Both the bensons and furniture village beds didnt have hardnesses so are they fairly standard and we would be safe in terms of comfort buying a bed such as the Madrid that you have? I dont like the bounce of sprung bases so would be getting a hard flat one.
How firm do you normally like your bed??
Some stores don't state the density of the memory foam in their mattresses because it shows the lower density ones to be be lower quality. You should be looking at 60 to 70kg per m3.
If you like a soft mattress then memory foam won't suit you, and you should go for pocket sprung only.We wouldnt be using any 0% finance offers so it seems silly to pay extra for that obviously. My main priority is getting a decent bed, so although i dont want to pay over the odss, if a £1500 was better than a £700 online one i would be happy to pay that.
You can make even better savings than that on line, but check the returns policy carefully. Is there an optimum height of mattress, i know you said a 2-2.5" foam was the best. There also seem to be so many different types of that with everyone saying theirs was the best so not sure how you judge that quality either? You say you prefer visco to latex, is there much difference?
Not really, although most quality mattresses are at least 9.5" deep.
2" of memory foam is best, but you can go up to 2.5".
Yes there is a difference between Memory Foam and Latex, you should try both out in a shop to see which you prefer.0 -

This is the one I'm now going for. Now, it's not the fabulous looking one from Bensons (see earlier post) BUT I've searched and searched and searched and Tim's heart must be ROASTED with me by now. Oh, and the shop (can't remember the name but it's attached to this website) can deliver tomorrow. All of that, coupled with the fact that we're heading for a pretty severe downturn in fortunes I've decided to be a bit more frugal.
The biggest reason I was going for the Bensons one was I was getting 2 years interest free. I'm now sure I'm not cut out for new fangled mattresses (latex, memory foam, sprung base, etc). Thanks to Tim mainly, I know my pocket sprung system is good, I know the 1100 spring count is good and I know Kozeesleep is a decent enough make.
I'm going to do a separate post in a minute (when the boss isn't looking - even though I'm on lunch) about Tim in particular (and his company)
I'd hate to see how much they charge when they don't have a stock clearance, because they are hugely overpriced............and the photo isn't even a pocketmaster.0 -

If it is a standard UK (not continental) king size bed, then is will take a standard UK king size mattress which are 6'6" x 5'.0 -

They charge £379 for the single.......is that what you are after?0 -
They are offering me the upcoming sale price plus an extra 10% off so it nets down to £359. I've already secured the same deal on the bedstead so thats coming to me at just over £520 instead of £829.0

So what size are you after?
Also what size are the gaps between the slats on the bedstead?0
