Which mattress? (merged threads)

We seem to be dealing with the same issues again and again on this board and it needs to stop. We have accusations of self promotion on one side and victimisation on the other and it’s getting out of hand.
The user Tim Deegan has been helping people on these boards for almost 2 years and many people have benefitted from his experience and advice in the area of beds and mattresses. However, some users feel that he has been promoting his own company and have complained to Abuse. We have been dealing with these complaints but apparently, this has not been enough for some users and now we have counter complaints about harassment and victimisation. It seems that some site users have been going out of their way to follow Tim and others around and comment on his every post. We have been gathering information regarding some of these accounts and if the reports regarding AEs being created to harass other users are true, we will ban all accounts involved. We would hope that people take this hint and conduct themselves in an appropriate manner.
Quite frankly folks, this situation is ridiculous and is wasting our resources so let us be clear from now on:
Posters (and this applies to everyone) will not use any terms that indicate they have a business related to the topic. For example, statements like “I'm not allowed to advertise here but..." or “I’d provide a link but it’s against the site rules” etc. could be misconstrued as subtle advertisements and must not be used. If someone asks about your credentials, it’s enough to say “I have worked in the industry for x years”. Links to images on your own website are similarly banned.
On the complaints side, if you have a problem with a post, report it to Abuse. After that, the responsibility is ours to deal with it. If the post remains unchanged, you can therefore assume that the post is allowable. You do not need to keep reporting it or others like it.

hopefully this will mean we can get back to the task of saving money and making sure the correct products are purchased! Keep up the good work :T

but much to my regret I didn't . So, a sleepeezee, king size, 1000 pocket sprung bed and base (no drawers) has just been delivered, hiked up the stairs, and put together by two very helpful delivery men. I paid £450 including free delivery and two free ordinary pillows from an independent retailer, who do not specialise in beds (actually they specialise in carpets...). It's called a Royal Supreme divan set and I wouldn't be surprised and would not be worried if it was old stock. I have no idea whether its a turnable matress or not, I cannot find it on sleepeezee's web site and when I call it asks me to leave a message - so I doubt that they will call back.
My questions to Tim if you have time / energy and wouldn't mind is - have I got an OK deal (or paid well over the top) and do you know or how can I tell whether it's a turnable matress?
many thanks0 -

I have no way of knowing without at least seeing a link to the bed.

I'd be a bit careful with your comment there as you are implying that all previous opinions on this thread are not honest. Whatever advice has been given on here, at the very least gives food for thought.... and I have no evidence to prove it is dishonest.
It may be worth giving the top 4 Pocket Sprung mattresses from the Which test which tested amongst other things the durability and support of the mattress.
John Lewis JL Pocket Comfort 1 (£295) very soft
John Lewis JL Natural Pocket 2 (£350) medium
Hush Options Pocket Mattress (£300) firm
Magnificent 7 Pocket (£249) soft
The results after this were pretty close including Windsor Bed Company, Ikea and Airsprung. Of course they advise you to try before you buy. They did not test pocket sprung and foam in the recent review but did a couple of years ago when Healthbeds Memory Med 1400 won.
However, the range of beds tested was very limited when you consider the vast array of mattresses available.
For what it's worth, before I got involved in my current bed purchase. My wife and self looked at beds in John Lewis, and they were very helpful. And we did speak to an assistant who seemed quite knowledgeable, and who was honest enough to admit "No need to turn" on mattress certainly did not mean that it can be turned if wished. And that there certainly was not anything inbuilt to give the same longevity of a two sided mattress.
As a matter of fact co-incidentally, I believe it was Option 2 of the same 3 options you mentioned that we chose as our most likely (other than memory foam), choice for the price, being the firmer feel, although told the springing specs were all the same the difference in feel and firmness being effected by extra layers of Egyptian cotton.
Unfortunately I found that my interest expired after I asked if we would be able to return still sealed, after the first night or so if found not to be comfortable or to liking? The answer was "I'm sorry sir we prefer customers to be sure of their choice in store before purchase"!
Five minutes or even half an hour is no good to me to pre judge likely comfort.
And neither do I intend to ask to sleep in store all night. Either with or without wife!!
I did also notice that a couple of sites I saw linked on here recently did seem to have pretty dismal returns policies. As unfortunately so do the Co-Op and quite few other stores I looked at.
Something for anyone to perhaps also consider when making a purchase?
(I also hasten to that I do not refer to Tim's site, which in my opinion (or imho even), found that the returns policy appears very reasonable).

Many thanks Tim.Tim_Deegan wrote: »Flex bond would normally be used in a mattress that didn't contain memory foam.
The manufacturers were positive in their assurance of that part of specification to me as being "50mm of viscous elastic memory foam, with a density 65Kg/m3.
After recent experience of an Airsprung Carlton Trizone Memory mattress having 50mm of memory foam with a density of 50 or 55Kg/m3 (which disappointed from some other aspects, aside of this). I do find that the memory foam on this mattress is certainly firmer and more supportive, (as are the springs). And does appear to react in the manner ascribed to memory foam, which gives rise to hope that the specification for this, given to me by the manufacturer, is to be believed. And therefore to again hope that the flex bond referred to might perhaps be used between the memory foam and the springs, and/or the bottom layer, or wherever.
Especially given that two sided memory foam now no longer looks likely!
(And to perhaps wish they hadn't mentioned flex bond to me in the first place!!).Tim_Deegan wrote: »I'm not convinced that it isn't reflex foam encapsulated springs. It looks like one, and they diddn't seem too sure about other specs. Feel along the side of the mattress, does it feel like foam, or can you easily feel the springs?
The vents don't prove anything.
Ah, thanks didn't think to try that. Phew! Pleased to say can easily feel springs. As a crude measurement/approximation their centres (pitch) seem to be roughly around 44mm apart. :beer:Tim_Deegan wrote: »Personally I think they have made a mistake by saying 'turn mattress often'. If it was two sided then you would expect them to make a big thing of it.
It's certainly now looking that way.Tim_Deegan wrote: »It could take a few weeks before you know the true firmness of the mattress.
The lack of information is deliberate. They do it so that they can compare it to a higher spec mattress because the basic spec seems similar.
If you got it in the sale with Argos then it is probably end of range. So you will probably have a good bargain.
Pocket springs will squash down more than the open coil springs in your old mattress.
Again, many thanks. I guess it's fingers crossed now then! :T

Hi Tim, it's a Royal Supreme divan set - but I cannot find it on any website. I did manage to get hold of Sleepeezee who told me that it is quite a basic model - 1000 pocket sprung, damask top, and a turnable matress. so my question now is did I pay through the nose?
Many thanks0 -

I am looking for a new bed and this one (http://www.dreams.co.uk/en-gb/ProductDetails/?cid=HCHP&pid=371-00029&language=en-GB) seems good for qaulity and price.
Does anybody know if,
a) it is any good, &
b) would i get a better deal anywhere else
Cheers all

Do a forum search on Dreams, that should help you decide.
The issue most potential patrons of Dreams have had, is that there is no price comparison avaialable as Dreams get beds made for them at lower standards and higher mark up. You will get a far better product for less money from a small bed manufacturer who needs quality and word of mouth to be their selling point.
