  • Hi, I've lived in Nottm all my life - Mapperley and now Gedling. I suppose the first questions are have you got a job lined up and if so where and do you drive.

Mapperley is on an excellent bus route into the City (buses run every 10 mins) and take 20 mins or so. Great shopping area on Mapperley Top but bear in mind it is very hilly so some roads can be a tad treacherous in the snow/ice.

West Bridgford is the other side of the city across the river but I travel that way to work every day and the traffic is no different than any other city I guess. But you do have Forest and Trent Bridge Cricket Ground's as well. It's a nice area but overly expensive in my eyes and as it's by the river you do have to watch for flood risk areas.

Woodthorpe/Bramcote are very nice but I would class as a places your gran would live.

Beeston is also is a decent place and is close to the Uni and Queens Medical Centre.

Ruddington is a bit further out and has some lovely houses, as do Woodborough & Gedling Villages. There are also lots of lovely villages surrounding the city.

Places to avoid (in my opinion) St Anns, The Meadows, Bestwood, Bilborough, Strelley, Clifton, Hyson Green, Radford.

It depends really on where you'll be working as to where you look I suppose, if it was me looking for a new house I'd still look at Mapperley or Gedling Village as I've always lived here and never had any problems.
  • Ok so just noticed this thread was started back in 2005, I would guess you're settled in and have your own opinions about Nottingham now !

West Bridgford has nice parts but has a reputation for snobiness - whether that suits you or not is down to you, but you will pay a premium for living there.

As for the North/South of the river argument - this isn't really valid, there are lots of nice areas North of Nottingham. Linby is lovely, I hear that Ravenshead is very nice and safe, and areas such as Watnall and Nuthall are very well thought of.

Parts of Sherwood are nice, and it has easy access to the City Centre - but there are also some very run down streets too.

We moved up over 10 years ago and after renting for a while in West Bridgford, bought in an area on the up with excellent public transport links, rather than in an area already at it's peak, and have never personally witnessed any trouble.

Nottingham City Centre is excellent by the way - good shops, good theatres, cinemas, bars and best of all - extremely friendly people.

Thanks for all the replies guys and gals. I'm taken notes on the pros and cons of each area.

    Ok heres our situation:

So far we have looked in around Mansfield Woodhouse, Forest Town, Berry Hill etc. Mainly because we have family there so I think we would like to be quite close to this area.

Requirements are pretty straight forward in that we'll need a secondary and primary school pretty close by, travelling to work not too much of an issue as I'm prepared to travel upto 50 miles if I have to, a budget of £225k.

I'll defo be doing some extensive research into the pits as I don't want to be waking up one morning and find a huge hole in my back garden.

Also noting the latest charts it would seem that yes areas in and around Nottingham have levelled off ans starting to creep downwards. All better for me of course.

Thanks once agin for the continued advice

    How about Rainworth?

Chinup, could you let me know why no to Bilsthorpe? I appreciate it looks quiet and more rural perhaps but that would suit us I think.

    Thank you very muchy

If you are wanting to be closer to Mansfield, have you looked at Hucknall, Linby and Papplewick? The former two are villages (and you may not get much for £225K), and Hucknall is a small town.

Hucknall does have its bad areas, but then doesn't everywhere. If you fancy a new build there are some lovely ones about, and they seem to create communities of there own.

If you want any specific advice on the above areas just PM me x

Bilsthorpe is an old pit village (granted so are Linby and Hucknall), but it hasn't moved on from that time. I would definitely avoid.

Rainworth I don't know much about to be honest, but by reputation it is not good. I'm sure someone else will be able to give you a more informed view though! x

  • ravenshead is nice you should be able to get something there for that budget - also with the new link road the congestion on the A60 isn't nearly as bad as it used to be

Maybe a regeneration due and those house prices to increase :D

Thanks for the offer on the PM. We'll be heading up that way again soon so will no doubt find more areas of interest.

Ravenshead noted littlemissfrugal, thank you
