new for old insurance

I have just claimed through legal and general for accidental damage to my 2 and a half year old Samsung flat screen CRT TV. I am in the process of taking pictures of the area before and after the accident to email to them?????
best thing is I will need to drag the tv back into the house and hope the apple juice that was spilt down the back whilst still switched on(thanks Kids) does not drip on the carpet
Anyway my question is I have new for old cover, the lady I spoke to at L&G said that their supplier would be able to replace the exact model or something near to, would I be able to either ask for vouchers or an upgrade if I was not happy with what they were offering as I would much rather have the damaged TV replaced with a more modern model of the same spec

You may be able to pay the difference to get an upgrade.
However vouchers may not work well.
The insurers have large accounts with some stores and get a masive discount.
If you ask for vouchers you might only get 50% of the value.
I would investigate getting an upgrade if that's what you want.0 -
thanks for that I think I will try that one, if I were to go out and buy a new TV I would not buy the model I have now in fact I would not be able to buy it in the major retailers stores0

That may be so, but I think you need to remember that the insurer isn't obliged to get you what you now want.
They are only obliged to replace on a "like for like" basis.
Usually no-one has any problems if you want to cover the cost though (unless it's impossible for them administratively).0 -
you would most likely be offered a samsung flat screen LCD tv as the samsung tv's have some features specific to samsungs and they dont manufacture crt's any more, so a lcd samsung would be closest like for like.0

thanks for the comments what do you think they will do about the screen size as the damaged one is 28" and I think the only sizes samsung do near to that are are 26" and 32''0

I am not sure what they would ty, but the correct thing to do if they cannot replace it exactly would be to give you something that is the same or BETTER than your existing model.0

Thanks I do hope so I don't want them to try and fob me off with another model thats not the same spec or a Samsung because I really did like the damaged one, oh well we will just have to wait and see0

Some insurers arrrange for the supplier to contact you and discuss the damaged set. They have access to back catalougues and by asking questions they can determine the exact model. Of course, you can bypass all that if you know the model number.
They should then select a modern equivalent and explain why they feel that is the nearest equivalent. At this stage, it helps a lot if you have access to an internet connection while on the phone so you can double check them.
You can ask about upgrades and they will work out the price difference and bill you for it along with the excess. I did this a few years ago when a Flymo electric mower caught fire. They could replace with same type but I asked about a petrol mower instead and they agreed this was possible.
As I say, depends on the insurer and quality of the supplier though.0 -
Does anyone know if these people still keep stocks of CRT TV's0
-
Yes, powerplay and other companies bought large stocks of most sizes to deal with 'oppotunistic' claims where a old CRT TV breaks.0
