been having trouble with my virgin media internet connection for about 4 days. called up technical support yesterday and managed to resolve the problem. on another note, im tempted to join o2 broadband for £7.50 per month so i called up retentions and explained that i thought the £18 per month for a 2meg service was overpriced considering what competitors were offering. the operator made little (or no) effort to persuade me to stay on. i informed him that i was thinking of changing over to o2 and he said he could offer me £10 per month for 2 meg. i said to him i could get a much faster service with o2 for less than that. from that point onwards, he didnt offer anything else. been with the company for about 2.5 years, a loyal customer i would say.

i have decided to cancel my connection, it due to be cut off on the 13th august. im thinking i will order o2 broadband about 10 days before.

does anyone know when the quidco £25 cashback offer runs out?

No one really knows other than a few people at O2.

We (affiliates) often only get days notice when a promotion is being dropped or altered.

Some very useful posts, cheers all.Ive been paying £18pcm for bb m & a short call reduced it to £10.I am well pleased as its been problem free,Mike.& I get £17 back this month1

Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.
  • I have the complete package from Virgin - (I have been with telewest from the begining.) Tel - line rental £11, Talk Unlimited £7.95, XL TV package £22.00. £10 V+ and £25 Broadband L - I have an extra box upstairs £15 - for this I pay £80.95 a month with a £1 deucted for e billing and £10 discount for the extra box.

I've not been happy for a while - especially when Virgin keep sending me offers through the post  (as a new customer) - so I'm going to ring them and see what if anything they offer. ;)

For £85 they have a standard package called VIP.

    https://www.virginmedia.com/vip

XL TV, XL Broadband, XL Phone, Sky Sports, Sky Movies, V+ box and also a standard V box.

You could try with retentions see what they can offer to lower your costs.

They might drop the £10 V+ monthly charge as for about 18 months new customers who have XL TV don't pay a monthly charge for V+ those on M or L pay £5/month. Existing V+ customers on the old £10 deal, can pay upfront to drop onto the cheaper / free V+ monthly fee, retentions are likely to drop it / reduce without the need of upfront fee.

Best to look at what you have and do you use everything you pay for, do you make many calls during the day for example, do you need 4Mbit broadband, you may do, but at least you can then arm yourself with the required info to fire at VM.

  • I've just finished talking to Paul in Customer Relations - told him I wasn't happy with the cost of my bundle. ;)

After trying to save money by cutting my broadband speed and phone package - he offered to upgrade me to 20mb broadband (currently on 4mb) and reduced my bill by £9 a month - not bad for a 5 minute chat.

I'm quite happy with this - but will try to reduce further in the near future.:rotfl:

I've submitted submitted notice of termination. Am I likely to be contacted by retentions?

They do occasionally call. Though often find they don't and your phone and tv is often cut short before the 30 day notice period.

If you want a deal, it's best to call them and select you want to cancel then tell them why you want to cancel and what you can get elsewhere as then they will offer a deal.

I am on the £21 a month deal with Virgin Media, this gives me

Medium Broadband-Think it is 2 mb
    Talk Unlimited-Free UK calls anytime
    Tv Size-Medium

My contract is coming to an end soon and I was wondering if anyone is in the same situation and any offers that have been floating about.

I did phone up, and they offered to knock £1.50 of the bill every month, but I am sure there are better deals than this.

Well I am currently on the same package as you, but having joined last August this was soon to increase to £28 (not inc. eBill £1 discount). An increase of 1/3!!

Just got off the phone to the very helpful Ian Ferguson in Customer Services. I was all prepared to switch to Post Office HomePhone and O2 Broadband, thus reducing my monthly bill to £17.45 as my parents have offered me their old Freeview box to replace the TV element.

As a light user, I would not have re-subscribed to Talk Unlimited (for an extra £7.95/mth - not included in the £28 figure above) although as I work some weekend shifts I'd be spending more on my daytime and weekday calls.

Ian was most helpful, and offered me Phone size M and Broadband size M for £15.50/mth. Cheaper than the Post Office/O2 option, but costing me more in daytime and weekday calls.

Then he offered me what he called a 'retention deal' of:

Phone size L (ie. Talk Unlimited free for another 12 months)
    Broadband size M
    TV size M
plus Talk International and Talk Mobile.

all for £20.49 per month. (£19.49 with eBill discount)

Now you might say "thats only a 51p saving!" but they way I see it, I'm getting *more* service (3p calls to my French relatives) for less money, and if I hadn't considered leaving it would have gone upto £28 minimum, or £35.95 to keep all the call costs I'd been used to. I will now not be concerned about how long I call people during the weekdays.

Very helpfully, Ian also noticed that calls to my my sister (on an 0845 University switchboard) were costing me money, and recommend I check out http://www.saynoto0870.com for an alternative to call.
Now that is what I call *real* customer service.

TOP TIP: They can't delay the retention deal to run consecutively after the first 12 month period. So, for example, I'd wanted this new deal to run straight after the old one ended on 31st August 2008, but apparently it has to be changed then and there. So I would say wait until a bit nearer the time before you call to cancel (but this then obviously raises the questions of how long they can offer the particular deal, and getting a new service installed for continuity of service). I guess I've effectively given up just over 1 month of my August 2007 deal . . but oh well - I've got another 12 months at a fairly acceptable price!

    Philip.

After reading this I had to try it myself! I was paying £18 for just M broadband, they have changed it to £11 now and if I sign up for e billing it will go down to £10 a month saving me £8. I phoned the free phone number and it didnt even take 5 minutes!
    THANKS!
