I called up once and foolishly accepted their £2 discount on a £3.50 price increase, so I called up again two days ago to cancel that and they said "because you mentioned the price increase i'll waive the fee".. don't think he really checked anything.
Are they giving permanent monthly discount or one off credit for whole year ??
Will that discount/credit continue next year ??

got my retention call back today.. if you call them directly they say "don't call we'll call you" - presumably you're looking for the "cancellation" line anyway - don't know the number...
anyway, my story..
previously paying £47.90
TV L
Broadband XL
Talk Weekends
due to rise to £51.40
Phoned them first time to cancel and made the mistake of accepting the £2 off the £3.50 price increase, then immediately regretted it. Called back a week later to cancel and got the call back today.
Offered me £39.99, no price rise and 1 free month to keep the broadband speed the same instead of doubling, and tv package the same, but ended up with
TV XL
Broadband XL (but no speed doubling - not due for over a year anyway so no loss there!)
Talk Weekends
for £47.90 with no price rise and £60 credit. So effectively TV XL and a month and a bit for free
(might have some minor pence details wrong on those offers)
I don't need a speed increase, would rather not have a price increase & keep same speed.

So can they decide if or when your speed is doubled ??

No, the speed increase is standard for all.
They are changing the package speeds to be up to double what they are now and REMEMBER - the price rise is NOT connected to the doubling of speed, the price rise is an annual event, every April.0 -
Iv'e got
xl phone
xl tv
10meg bb
Caller id at £51-40 a month rang to cancel today and best she would do was give me 60meg and keep the others the same for £55 but that would include the increase coming next month,So really iv'e blagged an extra 50meg.I cancelled anyway what do you think guys i doubt i'll get much better.Cant go to sky its terrible round here for internet.0 -
I reckon they could be being really sly actually...I wonder if they are upgrading everyone now for the same cost to the higher band broadband so you get the extra speed and then when your area does get doubled they drop you down on to the lower tier at the same cost.
Net outcome you pay 'the same' for what you were going to get anyway...0 -

Well got a call this morning from retentions and was offered 30meg bb no doubling later on but increase as soon as the superhub gets here all the rest the same, price drop to £44 a month for 2 years and 2 months for free so well happy at that and gone for it.I don't follow the logic of that,Iv'e had a price reduction 2 months for free and bb tripled.
The logic is this - your BB is due an upgrade, for free say in June.
Virgin move you to 30mb BB now (for three months), then when your area gets its speed upgrade you're already on 30mb, so they put you back to the package you are on today (pre doubling) - whereas, if they put you on 30mb today and you still got your doubling of speed to 60mb you would be getting a better deal.
Basically, they are giving you a speed now, for the short term but in the long term they are making more money out of you as you will be on lower allowances in terms of the traffic shaping.
Quite clever actually...0 -
yes I was a bit dubious about that one as well because I don't know if they really have the facility to drop customers back a package when they get the upgrade... but for me, it really doesn't make any difference because my upgrade is at least 12 months away at which point I can cancel again - so I don't mind getting a discount for nothing really! How were they going to give £2 discount or discount you accepted ??

They gave me a discount @ £2 per month for 24 months which was applied as a monthly 'loyalty discount' or somesuch from my last bill onwards. I actually did get £2 of credit refund after my last bill, but I presume it's being removed again from april and superseded by the new discount I'm getting
Just to add to that, my package online is now showing as XL TV and XL Broadband (previously L and XL), I don't actually have the extra channels yet, on "track my orders" it says:
I'm being upgraded on:
April 6
Friday 6th April
so presumably that's how they're giving me a specific package price without any increase happening.0 -
Had enough of Virgin and today have given them written 30 days notice of Cancellation,We have had months of outages on Broadband and the last couple of days even the TV as gone down, our original 12 month contract as long since gone so no problems there.Would love to negotiate a better deal but thee is no point if nothing works.
What happens now will they contact me with a final bill?
Who to go with now for broadband phone and tv?
Thanks0 -

That was an initial offer. I didn't get as far as retentions.
I was paying £21/month in my previous home and rang up to cancel when I moved. A few weeks later after I'd moved into the house I got a call from a guy offering a £10/month discount for 12 months, so I'm currently paying £11/month (due to go up to £12.50/month).
He wasn't able to offer me anything on TV, especially if I wasn't taking a phone line. More than happy with £11 or even £12.50 a month though, and just signed up to Sky with £100 M&S vouchers + £100 cashback. I'm planning to play Virgin and Sky off against each other when the contracts are up.0
