    What is retentions?

And what happens if they call my bluff, basically saying 'fine'. Will my line then be cut off in 30 days?

Hi, what package do you have? if its phone and bb and no tv then i suspect they will not be too bothered as they are the best bb provider. Should you give 30days remember you can cancel your notice and stay as you are so nothing to lose. You may well get a call from VM it all depends on what your worth to them.
    Good Luck!

Thanks for the replies. I just have L broadband, no phone or TV. Very unlikely they'll do a deal?

I'll ring up then and give my 30 days notice, then wait until day 29 to get a call from retentions, if not, then I'll cancel my cancellation.

I've done some other research and the cheaper packages out there all require a phone line for another £10 pm or so. Wish there was a package out there that just gave me broadband for a one off fee that didn't keep going up!

I wonder if anyone here can offer advice on the notice period for leaving without penalty? I am in the middle of a 12 month contract with VM, and last month received a letter telling me that the price was going up. Buried in the very small print at the end of the letter was the information that i could cancel without penalty and referred me to T&Cs at virginmedia.com/legalstuff.
When I went there it stated that I could leave without penalty only if I did so within 30 days of the notice of price rises. The question is when does this 30 day period start? The letter from VM about the changes only had February 2012 printed without the specific day, and I cannot remember when it was delivered - so when will the 30 days grace expire?

From the day you received the letter. I doubt they'll know exactly when that was either so just pick something plausible within the 30 days. Technically you'll still be tied to the pre-existing 12 month contract as long as they agree to not increase the price for the duration (which they may well do).

tbh, as long as you mention the price rise I think they will treat it as within the 30 days.. technically it expires 30 days after the notice, but I'm not sure if they even record that.. as clearly there's quite a spread of time between different customers receiving them.( from start of feb to now-ish).
I called up once and foolishly accepted their £2 discount on a £3.50 price increase, so I called up again two days ago to cancel that and they said "because you mentioned the price increase i'll waive the fee".. don't think he really checked anything.

waiting for any retention calls... I don't know if they'll leave a voicemail if I'm not in...?

got my retention call back today.. if you call them directly they say "don't call we'll call you" - presumably you're looking for the "cancellation" line anyway - don't know the number...

    anyway, my story..
    previously paying £47.90
    TV L
    Broadband XL
    Talk Weekends
    due to rise to £51.40

Phoned them first time to cancel and made the mistake of accepting the £2 off the £3.50 price increase, then immediately regretted it. Called back a week later to cancel and got the call back today.

Offered me £39.99, no price rise and 1 free month to keep the broadband speed the same instead of doubling, and tv package the same, but ended up with
    TV XL
Broadband XL (but no speed doubling - not due for over a year anyway so no loss there!)
    Talk Weekends
for £47.90 with no price rise and £60 credit. So effectively TV XL and a month and a bit for free :)

(might have some minor pence details wrong on those offers)

You need to phone either 150 from your Virgin Media phone or 0845 454 1111 from any other then choose options 1, 5 and 2. That's the 'thinking of leaving' number. I'm not sure you can call Retentions direct - they call you after you've given in your notice.

I had a call from Retentions and later wanted to speak to them again. I phoned the above number and they said they'd email the person I'd spoken to and a day or so later she rang me.

I doubt you'll get much better either but if you say the price increase is a reason for leaving they may well give you a free month.
