Thanks, I shall try that in a week or so....not due to cut off till 10th Feb......fingers crossed I can secure a deal with them soon.

Hi debs, sounds like they are calling your bluff.

I think the correct route to go down is pointing out what you can get from Sky for the same price.

I would ring back up and say since you cancelled you have been offered a deal from Sky. Make it up, say Sky HD with the entertainment channels, unlimited BB (upto 20MB), and unlimited talk inc line rental for £40. then ask for them to match it, do you not already have HD?? the current web price for your bundle INC HD box is only about £60 and you get 6 months at a lower price for a new customer.

See about what I am getting for £49, its more than you get besides the XL talk and for cheaper.

Alternatively you can try another bare faced lie which I have heard has worked before.

Phone up again and say I'd like to accept the offer I got earlier today...

Call Centre "what offer was that???"
You "A lovely young chap said I could get V+HD XL, XL BB and XL phone with caller display for the same as what sky are offering me, £xx"

Helps if you are pathological liar like me :)

Just noticed you tried the sky trick, they do like to pull that broadband card.

I think they'll phone back, if they dont you'll still get a better deal as a new customer. Plus go through quidco and get £60 cash back!

    What you'll pay
    Monthly cost
    Your bundle
    £24.56
    Virgin phone line
    £12.24
    Your extras
    £2.05
    Total
    £38.85
    £38.85 for first 6 months
    £60.85 after that
    One-off cost
    £0.00
    You save £40.00
    £40.00
    Your services
    Broadband XL
    TV XL
    Phone XL
    Virgin phone line
    Broadband extras
    Virgin Media Super Hub
    Phone extras
    Caller Display
    TV extras

Hiya Elgorm, thanks for the tips, I have actually rung them to cancel my cancellation due to the o2 engineer not being able to come out at a convenient time, so he wont be able to come for a few weeks. I have the info on new customer rates and also the info for o2 phone and bb and Freesat HD etc and what prices they are......my problem is that every person I have spoken to at VM know I can only get 5.5 meg from BT and 7. whatever with o2.....they use a site called Samknows to check even without me stating other companies offers.....so annoying as I could lie out of my back teeth to them and get a cracking deal but with what they know it is becoming difficult. I am following DaMaster's advice and waiting a week or so then ringing back up to cancel now that the O2 engineer can come and sort my land line out etc etc...shall push what a new customer can get and also the fact I have 2 contract phones with VM too....see where that gets me.....no HD although tele is....but I have asked a hand full of times about it and always told that I have to pay for them to sort it.
I really dont want to have to move as the net speeds are horrible....being used to 20 meg from VM and then having to think about really slow speeds like 2.2 and upto 7.7....urggggg.

once you call them to cancel, don't call them back, you will get a call from outbound retentions, they usually don't argue about the speeds you would get with other providers and just try and get you a better deal.

True, it is also irrelevant unless you are downloading movies etc as remember 1MB VM and other low speed packages served our purposes well for many years (non-VM customers are used to those speeds anyway, and with normal browing toy wouldn't notice). It is only as a result of them upselling us that we now feel that we have to have at least 10MB. That said, it is the main reason that I have been reluctant to go elsewhere :o.

I'm just out of contract, but I only have BB with virgin media, 50meg, sadly there's no competitors for that so I doubt I'll be able to get a better deal.

Might call and tell them BT infinity is available in my area soon so I want to go over to that and save cash.

I asked about trying to get a further call back from retentions to discuss adding sky sports to my deal for cheaper but he said he doesn't think they offer it any cheaper as they are standard, is this correct? I'm sure I read people have got sky sports via retentions for cheaper?

Alternatively, does anyone know where I can watch sky sports online for free?

The are places online to watch sky sports for free but its probably illegal and moneysavingexpert would probably not be happy me posting links..

Plus the picture quality is pretty poor too.

Can someone PM me with where to watch it or can I pay and watch it officially?

How much have people been offered sky sports package for by retentions? Any cheaper than the standard? I'm thinking of trying to pretend I was offered it for £5 per month or something when I spoke to them lol.....

Called up today, told them I was going to cancel. They asked why, I said it BT infinity was cheaper. They said 'Okay, thanks, I'll cancel your account'

So that's that. I'll wait a few days and see if I get a call to offer me to stay, if not they can sod off. o2 will cost me £5 a month. Lose a lot of speed but it's only £5.

Very similar to me, I have a theory that because you have BB only and won't take all their services, they want rid of you.

Think about it, sorry if stereotyping, e.g the wife wants phone, the kids want BB and you want TV, then they have 3 bargaining points when you want to leave.

I've moved to O2, via Topcash, now get 6Mbps, all being well it should work out at £22 for the year.
    Move along, nothing to see.
