This particular card is a cash card, not a debit card. And from other posts they appear to be witdrawing the overseas ATM facility from cash cards.

Sounds like Nationwide are trying to make debit cards hard to get

So we need to switch from the basic NW cash card to the NW visa debit card to still be able to withdraw cash from European ATM at 0% and other ATM at 1% in the future?

    That's correct.

Are there any disadvantages to the NW visa debit card?

Not as far as my >6 years usage experience in various countries is concerned - but then I've never had a Cashcard.

The VISA Debit Card is reportedly more difficult to obtain from Nationwide than the Cirrus Cashcard, from various posts on these forums.

I've had my cashcard since 2003 and used it exclusively for atm around the world just because of the good rates. Sometimes it's been rejected but I've always found another atm that was happy to oblige. The "benefits" of the cashcard+ are of no interest.

I will pop in to the NW branch tomorrow to test out the visa debit application.

BTW on Abbey Zero you have to tell the countries you want to use the card in and when (max 3 countries, and 90 days so quite what you do on a world cruise.....). NW don't need to be told.
  • I am travelling around the world for a few years starting in September and I have no idea what to do with my money. I am travelling through 23 different countries all with different currency. I think the easiest, safest thing to do would be to draw money out of cash machines in small lump sums (I'm travelling Asia so won't need much at a time) just in case I get robbed but banks charge a fortune for withdrawing overseas.. Anyone got any tips on what I should do?

I'd read through the following article (and any associated ones) on the main site for starters - http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-travel-money

To cover so many countries you'd be well advised to look at having several potential means of drawing currency available, in case of loss, robbery, ATM lock outs, etc., etc.
  • When visiting Mexico, I've encountered the following issue with exchanging money. taking dollar travellers cheques for security, when changing them at the hotel, I get pesos. Then most of the shops/stores/traders give you a poorer price when you pay in pesos rather than dollars. Anyone have a best practice solution?

hey, as this is my first post/question i am hoping i am doing it right.
Anyway, i am planning on spending my summer (before university) in malia, crete. After reading MSE articles and discussion area I applied for a nationwide debit card (0% load etc etc). i was refused. i checked my experian credit report and was told that my score, out of 999, was infact 999. i asked why i was refused and they informed me it was a low credit rating.
anyway, i got the cash card. and now have just found out (via this website) that i can nolonger withdraw on that card.
i have a silver account with lloyds tsb (listed as a debit card from hell to use abroad). however, i acn geta free travel money card from lloyds because of this. is this now my best option as i doubt i will be accepted for any of the credit cards or debit cards infact based on rejections for both the flex account and a halifax student account.
i realise this is a long post. im sorry but im really worried about how much withdrawing the money abroad may cost me + why i get rejected for things when i never miss payments and have been given loans/credit before etc)
    thankyou
