Final update, turns out what FD told me on the phone *was* too good to be true; the buyback rate for CAD when paying it in to a First Direct account over the counter at HSBC is 1.83 CAD to the pound (or was yesterday, anyway.)  And not the 1.59 I was told over the phone by FD.   So it would've been a wasted 30-mile journey if it weren't for the fact that I found a high street foreign exchange place nearby that offered a slightly better rate than the ones local to me. But I can't say my first experience of FD's phoneline was a good one sadly (though they've been a good bank so far in other respects.)

Anyway to answer myself the question I was asking originally, if this was anything to go by then the buyback rate you get over the counter when paying into your local bank won't match what you can find elsewhere online (but the best online rates will require you to post the money, which may be more trouble than it's worth.  It was to me anyway.)

  • Hi all.

I'm off to St Lucia on Monday and think i need some East Caribbean Dollars (XCD) and USD.

I have Revolut, Metrobank account and Halifax Clarity cards, but can't seem to find if i can use any of them over there to get cash out.

Does anyone know or should i just bite the bullet and get fleeced on an exchange rate locally here first (i live in London, anyone know the best place?)

    Thanks in advance

If you have Mastercard or Visa debit and credit cards, then surely any of these should be viable for withdrawing cash?
