I just read from Travel forum that there is a charge of US$5 for every single cash withdrawal in ATM in Bali and Indonesia in general. This cash withdrawal fee is quite small compared to Thailand. However, the problem here is that they will only allow you to wihdraw a small amount of cash for each trasaction e.g maximum of 2.500.000 rupiahs which is equivalent £138 (current exchange rate).

Does anyone know how to avoid this ATM fee ?
IF not is there any cash machines that charge lower fee with hoigher amount of cash that could be withdrawn ?

    Thanks
  • Not sure if this is the right place but be careful using Sainsbury’s I store foreign exchange counter the rates are very poor even with the nectar card. They will price match competition but only if you ask. The staff working there know this

Which is why you should always preorder using the TravelmoneyMax website which has a link from this site. Then you get a better rate locked in.
  • I used TravelFX.com and they were fantastic. Best rate easy to use money arrived by Royal Mail ahead of schedule. Would highly recommend 10/10.
  • Problem with website. Can’t load currency required so it won’t let me continue,

Halifax credit card is good for overseas, non-EU travel. However beware that to view your account online, there is now dual authentication - they send a text to your mobile with a code and then you have to enter the code onto the website login in order to access your account. They have confirmed to me that if you don't have a working UK phone number to receive the text, you will not be able to access your account, period. They do not have alternate arrangements like other banks (which is clearly inadequate of them). So for those of you who use local sim cards when you travel, keep this in mind.

This info could be useful for some. Personally I use the Halifax app on my phone with which I can always view my account by fingerprint (or PIN) login, no need for OTP. Additionally I use a dual-SIM phone with my UK SIM in one slot, others could keep it in spare handset.

Is there already a post listing the best ATMs to withdraw cash fee free using Clarity card?  The only one Google found was a revolut thread elsewhere. In the spirit of helping others:

    Austria

Raiffeisen Bank - avoid €3 fee
    Sparkasse          - avoid €3.75 fee
    BTV                     - Good* (used)
    Volksbank          - Good*

*during the withdrawal process, you are asked if you want to be charged in € or £.  There is blurb on screen about the exchange rate plus a 6% on top.  Press the EUR button at this point.
Volksbank had a similar screen to BTV so I assume it is also the same.
  • Hi, I live in the UK and I have some leftover Canadian currency and I need to convert it into euros. What would be the best thing to do? Would it be better to wait until I got to Ibiza to change or shall I just change my currency to pounds and then to euros in England? Many thanks if someone can help me with this.

Every time you exchange cash you lose a percentage so it's best to wait until you're in Spain for a single conversion. Having said that, Ibiza probably has few Canadian tourists so acceptance and rate may be low. Consider using fee-free card in future to reduce such losses.
