We all have to take risks in life, all mums and dads and kids. However, you are laying yourself open to much criticism by claiming you don't want to risk your daughter's health by buying a certain tin of formula. Formula milk runs far greater risks than breast milk for your daughter......I'm just waiting for the comments to start rolling in.0 -

if baby milk is only available on prescription only you are effectivly taking away the choice, and women will be forced to try and do something that they may not want to/cant do.
if people choose to feed their baby formula that is up to them- at the end of the day it is them that are paying for it
not having a go at you, just giving my opinion
oh, and i agree with you that the formula companies are only interested in money- same as all the other companies out there- you must have this that and the other as it is best for your baby etc etc
It's an important point, the choice issue - my opinion is that breastfeeding is part of motherhood, and it shouldn't really be an opt-out unless it genuinely cannot be done - in which case, there should be no judgement about using formula. Going back to the Sweden reference - 98% of mums breastfeed. The support and knowledge is there. In the USA, many mothers go back to work after eight weeks but a higher % are still breastfeeding than in the UK at the same point. It can and should be done - but in the UK, the support and knowledge currently isn't in place. 98% compared with less than 50% in the UK, after a few weeks? What are they doing that we aren't?
You mention that women may be "forced to do something they can't/don't want to do." Around 2% of women genuinely produce no milk (producing 'not enough' is a myth, and can be dealt with using specialist advice), are on medication that is incompatible etc, or their babies cannot feed for some reason. These women, would of course, get the help and support they need if breastfeeding was so prevalent. Pain from feeding can usually be solved with the right advice. And then if you still can't, then you can't...in fact I think for these women, there would be far less "formula prejudice" - people would know that formula really was the best thing for that child if they were using it.
Re. not wanting to do it; I know buckets of people will come forward and say "my child is formula fed, they are fine" and I'm not seeking to annoy people (as I've said already, support for breastfeeding is so poor in some places in the UK), but it's important to acknowledge that this is anecdotal. It isn't evidence. Breastfeeding is statistically far superior, and when it's viewed that way, why shouldn't every baby get the chance to be breastfed? "I don't want to" isn't really good enough, is it? (Although "I don't want to" isn't true for a lot of women, and I think in some cases, people genuinely believe it's just as good as breastfeeding, what with all the very dodgy "closer to breastmilk" claims. Notice how they never actually say "close" - it's just closer than it was before. Coke is closer to water when you take out the fizz).
I think another issue is time, as breastfeeding is generally quite time consuming for the first few months - if you don't have time to sit down and feed baby, do you have time for another child? Breastfeeding usually stops the periods of a woman feeding exclusively, thus effectively spacing her children (although it's important to note that 'exclusively' means no dummies or bottles, and feeding every three hours at least) so that she might have time to feed the new child.
The prescription model would need a good 30, 40 years to work in this country. But the amount of breastfeeding experience and knowledge that could be regained in this time would save a significant amount of money for the NHS and a significant amount of guilt for mothers. Mums who did need to turn to formula wouldn't have to fork out for it, and wouldn't have the regret of wondering if there was anything else they could have done.
Sorry, that turned into a bit of an essay! But I hope that answers your question.I like you. I shall kill you last.0 -

To be fair, you don't know whether the original poster was able to breastfeed or not.I like you. I shall kill you last.0 -
A lot of women like myslef felt so bombarded with pressure to breast feed. I could not breast feed as my milk came in 3 weeks after my daughter was born and even then i was not producing enough! How dare anyone tell any mother what she can and cannot or should and should not do with her own child. I congratulate any mother who looks after their child, no matter how they do it. Tbh I couldn't care less what they do in Sweden, I live right here in Great Britain and no matter where I was I would still have problems, like many other women.
I believe that it is unjustifiable that Heinz put their price up by such a high amount.
Lets not judge anyone who does things differently than you, you don't have to agree with it but keep any silly comment to yourself as they are not helpful or needed in any way.0 -

If you're going to bottle feed at least give the poor thing something decent to drink.
They can have normal cows milk from six months.
OC
Thankfully my son took to breastfeeding (eventually) and so he has never had the need for formula milk, and now gets cows milk day time and breast at night and morning (he is 13 months nearly).
I echo the trying your local chemist and I saw some of this milk in Lidl I am sure, recently. Also if you have to buy formula at a higher price then use Boots as you will get points (only on the 6 months plus stuff though I think, not under 6 months. Not sure if you can use points to buy milk ?) Hope there are not too many upset tummies around.Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

wow ........................... stop now ..........
this post has nothing to do with the old breast is best line, thoughtless comments such as: you put your child at more harm by giving them formula, why do the BF brigade feel they have the right to drag the op's original post down to these levels? waiting for the comments to role in ? ? do you have nothing better to do with your time ? ?
i dont give a stuff how X, Y & Z feed thier children, and how I feed my children is mine and only mine concern ! quite honeslty it is no body elses business !
it has always saddened me that breast feeders feel they have the right to make saracastic unecessary comments about formula feeders, you dont catch formula feeders doing the same.
can people leave alone ?0 -

bernadette, i do not take offence to your comment. i had to stop breastfeeding as it just wasnt happening. i now know that it was because of my daughters tongue tie that it was so difficult. due to that not being picked up and lack of support, i stopped (not a decision i took lightly) but me and my daughter were much happier for it. i understand that breast is best but some people just cant do it.
dont know how this discussion turned into a breast is best debate. maybe we can stick to the original topic of farleys milk being extortionately expensivelove you lots like jelly tots0 -
