A few thoughts here. I travel very often from Tyneside to enjoy London as a tourist.
1. Travel with an oystercard ... This is always cheaper than anything else. OK the £3 initial charge is down the drain, but it lasts for life. No big deal.
2. For shows....... check out lastminute.com great value on £20 deals for a show and a meal.
3. For accomodation travelodge (I am a great fan) but book yonks in advance or check Ebay for unwanted nights or easyhotel (spartan but clean).
4. Don't even think about taking a car to London. It is a liability. Use trainline or megabus coupled with oyster and London is your lobster!
5. Go to Dalston market......a rattlin' good experience.
Give it some welly and enjoy the time there.
