London

Options
Hiya all

:)

Right I'm off to London early Aug for 3/4 days and would love a few top tips please.

I have the free Motor Show tickets, son would like to do the Wembley tour (any freebies? top tips?
I've booked a couple of nights stay (1 night in Kew and 1 in Wembley) and am looking for a 3rd nights stay, maybe a theatre/hotel combo........any tips, we have looked at We will Rock You or The Lion King.

I'm also unsure whether to drive down (from Lancs) or should I let the train take the strain? any cheap tickets/advice. We will be using the bus/tube when in London for getting around so is there any better tickets I should get or more importantly avoid?

We'd like to do the duck tours to and have a good nose around all London.

Please let me know anything that may be of good use to me and son aged 15 and a half, elder son I think will be left at home ...........................(omg)

    Rail card offer...

When booking your train you may get an offer of a tube ticket cheaper at the same time.

    I'll be back :)

RE: Tube & bus - you can do one of 2 things:
    - Buy an all day bus ticket (£3.50 I think) and an all day all zone tube travel card (about £5) or
    - Oyster card. Costs £3 for the card. It's something like nlimited bus travel is £3 and unlimted tube travel is £5.10.

Thanks Edilass for bursting into action!

I've been looking at the free audience tickets and unfortunatly younger cub is still 15, so many (most) of the shows are only open to over 16/18's........booooooo

In all honesty I think the train would be too much like hard work as I am travelling to 2/3 hotels in various parts of London and I really don't fancy lugging my case all over :)

    (well cub doesn't)

I like the oyster card option :) ta

£5 for all 6 zones??? Where do you get that from? I live in London and its about £13-14 for all 6 zones travelcard and even for 1 and 2 is about £5.70.

Oyster is always cheaper but if you are only going for 3 days you may not recoup the £3 charge (not sure if its a deposit if you don't have a london address)

That's what I paid when I was in London in October.

You could try www.megabus.com for cheap train and bus tickets to London.

www.tfl.gov.uk is the transport link. You could download a tube map and plan your trips in advance. A 3 day off peak travel card zones 1-6 (you can use on all the buses and tubes after 9.30am) is £20. Your 15 year old travels off peak for £1 on a travelcard (purchase each day from the station). You can use these travel cards to get 2 for 1 offers at a lot of London attractions (print off vouchers and show travel card)
    http://www.daysoutguide.co.uk/
Tower of London, Kensington palace, London Dungeon (your lad will love that one), HMS Belfast etc.
You cannot use an oyster card with these vouchers and must have a paper ticket. The oyster costs £3 deposit and is 50p less per day than the daily off peak travel card price (as it is capped at that rate), but you would then have the hassle of often sending off for a refund of the £3 deposit and credit on the oyster (you can get from some big stations if credit under £5). Your lad would also need an oyster photo id card ordered in advance and you have to pick that up from a mainline station. For a 50p saving it is just not worth it and also you would not be able to get the 2 for 1 offers-so this alone would cost you a lot more.

With regard to the theatre-if you go to the theatre where the show is on for 10am they sell any best remaining seats for that day for about £20 (day seats-do search to see threads) .

The museums are free and worth a visit.

I would advise you to plan your visit in advance using the tube map to get as much done as possible, whilst here.

    Hello pandas66

Have you been to the Tower of London and seen 'The Ceremony of the Keys'?

It's free to attend but you must write for tickets:

I've been, it's free and it's great to be included in a piece of history.;)

thanks for the tube tips :)
this sounds ideal, we are going down on the Sat and it will be worth visiting the theatre ticket booth on the Sun perhaps? I do rememeber Mum doing this a few years ago, thanks for the reminder

Nile, I haven't even heard of the Keys! sounds good and I will apply but as I go in approx a months time so may have missed that 1. But it may be of interest to others reading this thread...ta x
