Hi CP - I'm a newbie, but these are my responses in order ...- red wine - definitely not during the first 14 days, but after that white wine or spirits (vodka, rum, brandy, etc) are the lowest-carb alternatives ................ drink responsibly
- up to 20g carbs per day for the 1st 14 days to get you started
- you'll have to determine your own own carb range to stay in ketosis after that by increasing your carbs by say 5g a day for a week and using the ketostix to check, e.g. 25g days 15-21, 30g days 22-28, etc
- cashews are a big no no for the induction period, but a great snack thereafter
- I don't know the answer to this one - I'm sure a long-termer will be able to advise
- I take a one-a-day multivitamin supplement, try to stay busy and use willpower - I wouldn't use appetite suppression tablets

welcome creditpunch are u doing atkins induction or just lowering yr carbs cos our answers will depend on the plan u are doing
iluvsjohn i have to say i dont find it anymore expensive than i did before when i was buying all the crap.... find yrself a good butcher who does meat packs rather than buying it from the supermarket its much cheaper (not to mention quality etc) that way
PLEASEEE PLEASE can everyone post what plan they are doing when asking questions my poor brain cant remember who is doing what so its hard to give helpful answers when not sure of the plan

I am 6ft,and 120kg my target is 70kg and I hope to do it in a year or less.
I have lost 6lbs in the last 3 days yay!! :T on low carbs put I am a bit weak (yet determined) now so I feel I need to power up on milestones and quick wins. in the last free days I have mainly had raw cashew nuts, omlettes and tuna salads and loads and loads of black tea. questions I have are- Red wine? is it good or bad as a glass a night is my weakness though if bad will scrap - scrap it. alcohol is not helpful when you're low carbing - there are lots posts on the thread about it. same for caffeine and diet drinks
- what typically is the carb gram range to get in Ketosis you're going to need to stay on induction until you're about a stone from your target weight. that's 20g of carbs per day (max) and only foods on the indction list. if you increase carbs your loss will slow.
- what typically is the carb gram range to stay in Ketosis around 20g
- are cashew nuts a big no no? definitely while on induction - all nuts are out. even after that, with 20g of carbs per 100g they are among the highest carb nuts. if you can't stop after a few, don't start!
- any helpul tips for those ketosis stage wavering days?
- How long is realistic and/or healthy to stay in ketosis depends on the individual
- any appetite suppression technics or pills available (that WORK)
I understand being in ketosis to be the typical stage 1 of Atkins. not quite. if you're low carbing properly you're never far from ketosis
thanks for your help.
:hello:
my comments above
please please please read up on the plan you want to do and make sure you understand it fully. you caould harm yourself if you only have half the facts
and good luck. i've been low carbing for 13 months and have lost 3 stone. I think I want to lose 2 more.
8 stone in a year may be a bit of a push, but I guess you'll find out!0 -

I suppose I'm correct in thinking that we all originally ended up at MSE for some sort of financial advice, and then discovered all the other benefits the site has to offer. Well, that's what happened to me!
What I'm finding with the Atkins diet is it's more expensive than my 'old' diet. All the meat, fish and eggs I need to keep me going coupled with my decision to buy ethically farmed items and those that aren't pumped full of cr*p (preservatives, water, sugar, ...), is proving a bit of a hit on the budget. My veggies and salads costs are still much the same.
Does anyone else find this, or is it just because it's the induction period?
Cheers!
I found it expensive the first week bot not now as during that first week I kept stocking up on reduced meats! I got some more today in Somerfield-2 chicken breasts in a leek and cheese sauce-just over 2g per serving so I can eat the whole thing if I wish!
I also got some reduced diced steak. This is how I do Atkins!!!
Apart from that I signed up to the gym today! Confessed my sins and had my first session-baby steps!
Tonight Im hoping for a quick swim-just 10 lenths or so.
I think this will work best-little and often-daily exercise whenever possible so no marothon swims now-but a gym and swim!
Not losing at the mo Im guessing as its TOM but Ive only got 2lb of bloating this time rather than 5 and my stomach is looking flatter by the day. The bulges are beginning to change shape. Def not all measured by what we weigh. One person said the other day that I "looked better" and another said there was sometihng different-my face is thinner. I thought that too but had put it down to wishful thinking!
Didnt have breakfast-wasnt hungry
lunch-3 slices corned beef
tea-chicken in cheesy leek sauce and cauli or leeks
Last night I did make meringues so had 3 yolks left-just had them with 3 slices of bacon. I dont do bacon often tho due to nitrates.
Ate too many meringues-must have been double my daily carb allowance but otherwise Ive been perfect. Not going to worry about that one!
Didnt rave over them tho and I wont bother again.(too tempting)
Prefer good chocolate if I have to eat some naughty carbs! Much more satisfying.Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0 -
Just a quick one ... can someone clarify the problem with caffeine and Atkins? The book says:
"Excessive caffeine has been shown to cause low blood sugar, which can make you crave sugar."
I read this to mean that you may crave sugar, and this could lead us to temptation! It doesn't say that it directly prevents or hinders ketosis/weight loss. I do like my weak black tea and coffee, and I've never known caffeine make me crave sugar, so I'm sort of assuming as long as I don't turn to sugar I'm OK. :undecided
Advice please. :T0 -
jury is still out on caffiene some people swear u can ONLY have decaff others argue just as hard that caffiene is fine
so i guess u have yr coffee if u dont lose then maybe its the coffee and u go onto decaf... personally i now have half caff and 1 full caffiene a day altho when i first started i only had decaff

Well, I've gone back to drinking green tea and lost 3lbs out of the 4lbs I gained on Induction! Of course, it couldn't be helped when my "approved foods" order arrived - £2 for 10 boxes of green tea with orange blossomMortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0

Well i still have strong tea and coffee, mostly tea tho and i still lose and i dont really crave chocolate, there's loads in my fringe for the boys but i'm not tempted.. at the mo
Thats not to say if someone put mt faves in front of me i wouldn't indulge, cos i have but i dont crave it0 -
So, to caffeine or not to caffeine is quite a hot topic! I don't want to compromise my induction period, so I'll switch to decaff coffee and green tea, and then reintroduce later. I understand the side effects of caffeine withdrawal, so I'll cut down over the next 3 days, and if necessary, I'll extend my induction period to account for the 'caffeine' days!
Thanks everyone - you're :As!0 -
Dude, green tea contains more caffiene than black tea!!!Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0
