Anyone else here noticed that 'winter veg' costs a fortune at the mo? Don't know what's going on there. Caulis are out of the bracket in asda these days unless whoops'd. Leeks doing ok but parsnips rule themselves out.
Spinach and Swiss chard are extremely good value green veg to grow if you've a space outside where you can have a bed. Because you cut and they come again you can go on picking carefully for many months.

You may find Lidl's or Aldi's have some cheap veg on offer. Aldi's usually have 5 fruit/veg offers around 50p
Lidl's may be a bit hit and miss but if you hit the right week it's worth stocking up. They do offers on celeriac quite often and red cabbage both those keep well, but this weekend we stocked up on onions & brussel sprouts.

was browsing that blog and read the post about how and why low carbing the second time around can be harder - few things kind of struck home really ......

I can really relate to that. In the past 12 months I have had no bread, rice, pasta, pastry, sugary drinks, very few spuds. I think our bodies get used to it so second time around there is not the rapid and amazing results. Mainly cos anything we gained by slipping off isn't offset by ruling out all the above - we weren't eating most of it anyway.

Heyho! The low carb way is apparently the most healthy (see Ted about this:D ) so even if we aren't losing we also aren't hurting ourselves as much as we used to.

I think it was me who originally brought up the agave nectar! I've always eaten it...

I won't pretend I've done loads of research, but my opinion is simply that it's a better sweetener than Splenda. No-one would recommend Splenda as a low-carb food! But it's better than sugar :rotfl:

So I use it on the odd occasion that I bake something that requires sweetening, or just as a flavouring with certain foods / drinks. It takes less than half a teaspoon to transform a Total yoghurt pot and one container lasts me about a month :) I certainly wouldn't advise anyone to pour it over their dinner, if that makes sense...

  • With regards to expensive cauli, I bought frozen cauli & broc for 79p each from Netto. Wasn't sure what to expect but they are really nice, big florets as well. May be worth considering as frozen is still supposed to be good for you.
Also, have discovered a really nice snack - salt & vinegar KP peanuts - omg they are lush!!

Wow this is so weird - i have been seriously thinking about starting a container veg garden this year! And lo and behold you guys start talking about it tonight! That's the magic of MSE :rotfl:

Mercy - I must investigate those threads you mention in the gardening board. Veg definitely seems dearer recently  So now's as good a time to start as any...

And I agree that with or without weightloss, low-carbing is definitely much healthier in metabolic terms... but weightloss would be very welcome as a bonus lol

  • Well, just come from my body combat class, that I had to dash out of during a track, as was gonna faint! Went all dizzy and saw flashing lights etc. My own daft fault for not taking my sports drink and relying solely on water. Plain water doesn't cut it as I'm such a sweaty betty I need me electrolytes and glucose!:j (me doing star jumps with no pants on!)
S'pose this means my carb stores are low, which is good, cos it's not like I was hungry or knackered. Yey, does that mean I'm burning fat instead of relying on carbs for fuel?.........off to eat/ruminate with the cauli and fish. x:think:
  • OK, who posted about the Atkins bars being on offer in Tesco:eek:

After losing my 4lb I thought I would treat myself to a snack and remembered the offer. I bought the strawberry ones as they were the lowest carbs (3g) and they are flippin lush (and very more'ish:o ) .
How bad are these going to be for weight loss? Please put me off them quickly before I go and buy more!!!:p

    B- scrambled egg and mushrooms
L- coronation chicken with bacon and cabbage leaves
    S- omlette

Snacks 3 (yes, three) Atkin bars:eek:

P.s. And you're right, your belly does make strange gurgly noises after these bars:o
If you think nobody cares whether you're alive or dead, try missing a couple of mortgage payments.

    My way is Atkins;)
