When your feeling really bright you may enjoy reading first Dr Eades summary of the Bray/Taubes row.
and then Bray's review of Good Calories Bad Calories (The Diet Delusion in UK) and then Gary Taubes reply to Bray

As readers will know it was because I had listened to Taubes I started my weight loss program. I intentionally (well I don't have an option as a matter of fact) did not increase the amount of exercise I am able to do. So ALL my weight loss has been achieved not only WITHOUT EXTRA EXERCISE but also WITHOUT CALORIE RESTRICTION. That is to say I haven't counted calories or carbs either and any reduction in calorie intake has been a RESULT of the changes in the nature of calories eaten and NOT the result of Calorie Restriction per se.
It is possible I could have lost more weight and quicker had I chosen to count calories and maybe possibly had I been able to exercise more, but the point I want people to understand are that changing the nature of the calories you eat ENABLES you to cut calories naturally and without effort because you don't have the inclination or need to snack and also you will as a result of losing weight, feel more energetic and thus feel more like exercising. I really don't want anyone to think I'm against people taking more exercise.

It follows my experience supports Taubes side of the argument.
Gluttony and sloth are the result and not the cause of obesity. Changing the nature of the calories you eat enables you to lower insulin levels that drive fat storage and by burning fat rather than storing it you lose weight and can then exercise more.

just to be clear atkins has always allowed 2 cups of salad and 1 cup of veg from the allowable induction list....yes fruit is restricted in the first 2 weeks but after that berries can be added

i take a spoon of fibresure every day, never been so 'regular' in my whole life lol

    Hi folks,
After a mad 2 days where I don't understand what I'm doing, I have decided to try to do proper Atkins.

Can someone please define a "cup" please?
Am I bashing salad into a coffee cup with a mallet? Do I liquidise everything? What a stupid measurement!!

And is there something I can add to water to make a palatable cold drink?
I don't like the taste of plain water (a phobia of mine).

it's an american measure. i usually measure in handfuls - so 2 handfuls of salad, a handful of broccoli, and so on.

but everything weighs a different amount!

a cup is a volume measurement! an american cup is around 225ml.

But.....how many handfuls to a cup?
    How big are your hands?
Do I close or open my fingers?
Up to what fingertip is a full hand?

    This is all very confusing....

Yes, it's a volume rather than weight measurement, which I've always found unsatisfactory. But you can buy a set of plastic Amercian cup measures fairly easily and they dont cost much.

Here is an American measures conversion chart from Waitrose's website.

Breakfast - 2 rashers bacon, dry fried mushrooms and a couple of cherry tomatoes.

Snack - some raspberries wih some Greek yoghurt (from the list)

Lunch - a "quiche" which is chopped bacon , some sliced cherry tomatoes, grated cheese and eggs is in the oven baking.

Have tried to make oopsies but they spread all over the tray , will try and bake them anyway and think of them as a flat bread!

DH came through earlier and asked if I wanted a drive out for some fish and chips- before I even thought about it "No thanks" came out of my mouth!

He is now shocked but pleased that I am taking this seriously.

Will try making almond thins tonight as I bought some low carb pate today along with more salad, greek yoghurt and some fruit.
