ATTACK OF THE KILLER CARBS
Ever wonder why you're so often hungry for more not long after you eat a high-carb snack or meal?
New research may help explain it.
Scientists at Monash University identified key appetite control cells in the human brain. These cells are attacked after eating, but the attack is bigger and stronger following a meal rich in sugar and carbohydrates.
"The more carbs and sugars you eat, the more your appetite-control cells are damaged", said Zane Andrews, MD, the lead researcher on the study. The result? You eat more.
The forces that compel you to eat and the forces that tell the brain "hey, this dude is full!" are constantly at war. When your stomach is empty, it triggers the release of a hunger hormone called ghrelin. When you're full, a set of neurons known as POMC's kick in.
Free radicals normally created in the body attack both the "hunger" neurons and the "anti-hunger" neurons, but the "hunger" neurons are naturally protected. This tips the scale in the direction of hunger and cravings.
And carbs create the most damage of all.
According to Andrews, people in the age group of 25 to 50 are most at risk. "The neurons that tell people in that crucial age range not to overeat are being killed off".
Yet another reason to limit your sugar and processed carbs if you don't want to be the victim of constant craving

I will tread more carefully in future!! :rotfl:0 -
Afternoon all - and hello to the newbies - good luck with the low carbing - I'm nearing the end of week 2 and now I've settled into it I feel great.
Getting back into excercise now as it keep me supple - I get very achey joints if I don't exercise. I did 15 mins jogging and 15 mins walking uphill on my treadmill - it's in front of a TV so I can watch Corie at the same time LOL!:D Thought I might struggle with not having many carbs over the last few weeks but I was fine.
DD is now doing low carb quite strictly - she wants to lose a stone and tummy boating so thats acheivebale if she sticks at it.
B - fried egg & ham with cherry toms
L - salad, coleslaw & cheese with herbs (aldi - yum yum)
D - not sure - fancy a burger with cheese and salad.
By the way - did anyone watch Bodyshock Half Ton Son last night? It was v scary that a 19 year old boy could get to that weight - what a dreadful life for him, and his mother def had some strange issues going on :eek:0 -
Didn't see half ton son avstar but saw the preview & it sounded like his Mum was the problem.
As for exercise  I do intend doing some but not sure what to do yet? I used to do a lot of walking but haven't done any for ages so might get back into that. We do have a treadmill so I have no excuses if the weather is bad! Plus if I go on the treadmill I can power-walk in private without anyone seeing me look hot, sweaty & stupid!
Anyway, at the risk of incurring the wrath of tinkerbell  my menu for today was/is going to be:
B - Stewed bramley apple & 2 tbs natural yoghurt
L - Salmon Salad - lots & lots of green stuff!! Honest!!
D - going to be Cheeseburger quarterpounder - without the bun of course + more salad or maybe a ratatouille type thing?
Pud - Jelly fool
Have also already had 2 slices of leerdammer because I just can't resist it!!:rotfl:0 -

Yep you have to find exercie that you like and having tried lots of things I've realised I like jogging & power walking on the treadmill in front of the TV.....I work full time and very limited free time so I can watch my favourite programmes while still exercising.
The treadmill cost £300 but now I don't have to pay a gym membership and I do use it alot so it's paid for itself already. I don't like running outside by myself esp inthe cold and dark:o
Sweetserendipity your menu sounds fine, tho the stewed bramely apple may be a problem as I might be wrong but cooking makes the sugar content higher? Might be talking horse-poo tho:rotfl:0 -

We watched it too, my middle one is 19 and he was shocked as hell. There's not a pick on him and he's tall and sporty and he finds it hard to understand how people can get to that extreme.
I dont care how many tantrums that hefty lad threw when he was young...his Mother failed him. Simple as.
Damn shame.Herman - MP for all!0 -

ahem - how many cherry tomatoes pls - tsk tsk !!!
not wanting to teach anyone to suck eggs here or owt but did you check the label if that coleslaw was shop stuff ? most of us make our own so we can reduce the onion and carrot ( or even omit carrot altogether ) and its so luscious and creamy with proper mayo - not a patch on the shops imo:j MFi3 wannabee :j

Unfortunately our treadmill is in the garage & it's freeeeeeeeeeeezzzzing in there!! Excuses excuses!! To be honest though I would much prefer to be walking outside if possible. Will hopefully do something tomorrow!!
Glad my menu sounds ok today - I didn't add any sugar to the bramleys but I know what you mean about the cooking aspect - is it something to do with altering the GI? Or I could be talking horse-poo as well?!:rotfl:0
