Low Carb Diet (atkins)
Comments

Thanks so much for all the replies so far. I've been going nuts on carbs for the past few weeks, so when I do start my diet, Phase 1 will be tough. Reading all the responses just helps to motivate me a lot more!
badgerlady - I think it's wonderful that you rescued the battery hens! I won't eat any eggs or chicken unless they're free range. Of course that doesn't help my tight budget but that's an area I won't compromise on.
Just for general info, the plan I'll be doing is South Beach (written by a heart surgeon - I think Dr Atkins was too?). It has three phases. Phase 1 is the toughest and is aimed at getting rid of cravings, rebalancing blood sugar etc. You do it for 14 days. No sugar is allowed, no fruit, and no pasta, bread, rice, potatoes etc. These things are re-introduced slowly in P2. But they are still quite limited and if they cause cravings or energy dips, you stop eating them.
The main difference between it and Atkins, AFAIK, is that you are allowed, to eat things like lentils, chick peas, kidney beans etc even in Phase 1.This does help with those, erm, bathroom issues !!
Thanks again everyone.
With low carb you usually stay on P1 until you're within a stone of your goal weight. So it's likely to be more than just the 2 weeks0 -

The supplements I use are Vitamin D3 7000iu/daily now in winter, I'll get another 25(oh)d test soon to check if that has got me above 125nmol/l but I may have to go to 10,000iu/daily. (that is the amount our skin would make daily if we lived naked, so don't worry about amounts under that level)
Omega 3 1.8g daily, that's the equivalent of 6 normal fish oil capsules, 3 double strength capsules or a large teaspoon of concentrated fish oil.
I also have ground linseed daily.
Magnesium. I'm using magnesium malate, Taurinate is also good. The best are Albion Patent chelates. I take 600mg daily.
But the important thing when buying supplements is to check the science first. Is there evidence to support the claims?
What research has been done?
Did they use a sensible logical amount, in the form the body naturally uses, and did they use it for a sufficient length of time for the body to replete it's natural reserves?
There is an awful lot of very bad research published so you really do have to try to use your common sense to work out if the conclusions are justified. My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

Thanks tinkerbell but I'm going to be doing the South Beach diet - Phase 1 on it is two weeks. Then you move onto Phase2. The idea is that P1 gets rid of the cravings (it does for me!) then P2 is the main weight loss phase. P3 is the maintenance phase.
I've never done Atkins so I dont have a clue how that works, but this is how you do it on South Beach. They're quite different diets, from what I've heard.
Sorry for any confusion I may have caused!0 -
Today's menu:
- Breakfast - carrot and orange juice (OK, not strictly low carb)
- Lunch - Cauliflower pizza with spinach, olives and meatballs
- Dinner - the rest of the pizza!
I've been doing Christmas shopping today, and done rather wellAlso got an electric food steamer from Freecycle which should help with cauliflower recipes etc... I still haven't heard about my job and it looks as though I'll have to wait until 20th January now

ooo, I forgot to mention earlier, but the BEST thing for me about low carbing is that i have really bad hypoglycemia (bad spelling i know, but low blood sugar!!)
It was so bad at one point that I used to have a 'hypo' on an almost daily basis. But since I started low carbing, nothing, nothing at all.
Its fantastic!!You lied to me Edward. There IS a Swansea. And other places.....
