Thank you for that link Ted - have now registered.

I have asked both my doctor and my diabetes nurse about testing my blood sugars and they have both said I don't need to do that, but come in for blood tests every 3 months!! The nurse even said "Oh! You don't need to be bothering with that until you need to go on medication" I don't want to go on medication . I believe my blood test was 6.5.

By the way, my diet (although not low carb) has always been reasonably healthy - Lentils, pulses, lots of veg, wholemeal bread (max. 2 slices per day), basmati rice, home cooked meals, etc. Don't like sweets (bar 75%+ chocolate :D), don't drink and don't take sugar in drinks. What I'm saying is I didn't live on crappy, junk food anyway, but came away from there feeling like a total failure!

PS Have lost 9lb already just by "sort of" low carbing!!:T
    Hi Frug:)
Don't feel like a failure, you're not. Some people are predisposed to diabetes regardless of what they do/eat:). I did find an interesting article for you that explains your blood result LINK

And, well done on the 12lb lost:T :T

how do you guys make your cheese sauce ?
i dont like it just made with cream - find it too claggy and creamy
i use a pot of full fat cream fraiche with big spoons of cream cheese - adding grated cheese to creme fraiche didnt work that well - stayed a little bitty/gritty almost
Hi daisy, I make my cheese sauce with cream:rolleyes: and its yum (and simple):D

100ml double cream (could you try single cream?)
    1oz cream cheese
Grated cheese (to your liking:D )...... I like my sauce quite thick so I find this fab but then, I used to like thick gravy too:beer:

    Hi ladyroughneck:)
I can't help you with teenagers as mine arn't that old yet but I try to find meals that we can all eat (eg cottage pie topped with mashed cauli instead of potatoe, Beef dinner.. they have gravy and a couple of potatoes and I have cheese sauce, chicken curry... they have rice and I have grated cauli or beansprouts)

    morning everyone

fruga your practice doesnt sound particularly helpful surely the point is to keep u OFF meds, the fact u have lost 12lbs has to count (well done btw) but as everyone else says u have to go by your counts etc... dont u dare feel like a failure when u are eating healthy and losing weight it sounds to me more like they are failing u than the other way around

lady welcome to our ever growing band and well done to u too on the loss so far... i have slowly moved my family off processed foods of any kind, i buy better meat, veg etc and have gradually reduced the amount of carbs they eat and moved them onto more veg/salad, wholemeal bread, pasta etc (children do need more carbs then we would have)... i did it gradually so they hardly noticed, also replaced sandwiches for school twice a week with meat, cheese and salad... just do it slowly or u will have a riot lol

daisy i use double cream and cheddar as well, if its too creamy could u water it down a little and use some xanthan gum to thicken it slightly?

off to stock up on veg/salad etc at farmers market today and think some steak from the butcher is called for!!

i saw a recipe yesterday for lowcarb doughnuts!!! (based on oopsie recipe)... u need a crueller pan (?) anyone got any ideas of what else i could use instead?

Avstar, I'm a 'low-blood-sugar shaker' too. I still get it occasionally, even when low-carbing, if I leave it too long without eating.

Aurora, so very sorry about your dad. What a sad time it must be for you and your family.

Frugalista, my OH was diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes in November. He has only recently started responding to medication, and almost had to go on insulin because his BG was sky-high. When he mentioned low-carbing to the diabetic nurse, he got short shrift. It's 'dangerous' apparently, despite many thousands of diabetics eating this way and, by doing so, keeping their BG low and steady, some without medication. The medical profession is totally blinkered; brainwashed, it would seem, by the government's high-carb, low-fat mantra. Interesting that in one of Ted's articles, the word 'conspiracy' has been used. I don't understand it at all. OH is following medical advice and eating lots of complex carbs, and his BG is nearing normal now - but he is taking 6 tablets a day...

And with regard to 'fault', it does seem that there needs to be two factors: a genetic predisposition and the wrong diet/lifestyle. Some people can be obese couch potatoes and never develop diabetes. But if you have the gene, then an unhealthy, high-carb, overweight, sedentary lifestyle is going to increase your chances dramatically. My OH was not obese, he was/is fit and active, but his father has Type-2.

    Anyway, yesterday for me:

    B: none
    L: sausage, bacon, tomato
D: other half of Catalan chicken, cauli mash, cabbage; strawberries and cream
S: large chunk of Tickler (an incredibly gorgeous tangy Cheddar) and a few cherry tomatoes

I did mean to go on induction this week but haven't quite made it (strawberries, tomatoes, wine, etc.), but hey-ho.

    Rose Elliott's Easy Tomato Ketchup

    100ml tomato puree
100ml red or white wine vinegar
    1-2 teaspoons dried oregano
    salt
    sweetener, to taste

Mix tomato puree and vinegar. Add oregano, salt and sweetener to taste.

Keeps well in fridge in a sealed container.

I've not made this, so would be interested to know what it's like.

You DO have control over how you react :)
  • Incidentally, why is it that most of the research/evidence is out of the USA and there seems to be none that is British? Is it that, as usual we are the cow's tail and lagging behind America? Even the books on this issue are all by Americans. Just wondered.................

    Morning lovelies :hello:

YAY it's FRIDAAAAY!!!!! :T :j:T:beer: Thanks goodness. Got a bit more sleep last night, so not feeling so zonked today, but golly this week has been a slog. Hard to believe I'm only just back at work this week after the xmas break. It already seems like a distant memory:rolleyes:

Hi ladyroughneck and welcome:) "Interesting" lol well that's one way of describing us - I have a feeling you're being tactful there:D:D With regards to low-carbing as a family - I remember Vik (who posted on here a while back) saying that when she low carbed she didn't even buy a book about it, she just cooked her normal family meals for everyone else and just substituted the carbs for herself - so she would make chilli, curry, etc for her family and have veg or salad in place of the rice or spuds herself. Pretty much same as what Newish2this said. Vik lost half her body weight, so it must've worked!

Frugalista - well done on the 9 lbs! :T

HC - thanks for the ketchup recipe I'll give it a go when I get the chance. You're not alone - we've also had berries and cream this week, can't help it we just love it:o We have ours in one bowl with two spoons:D

shykins - i had a quick shufty on google - seems you can substitute a crueller pan for any one you can deep fry in xx

B - chunk of smoked cheese and usual flax bread affair
L - not sure what I've got today coz Gilly made it for me (isn't he lovely?:D :A) but it looks like a yummy chicken-y salad-y combo)
D - again not sure. I wish i hadn't mentioned the fish fingers coz I might have to eat them tonight lol

lesley is it voddy and coke tonight?;):D

Have a great day everyone

    Much love,

  • Mary Vernon on the Jimmy Moore Podcast. While this talk is primarily aimed at diabetics it's a good listen.
She really is so enthusiastic and so clearly enjoys what she is doing that she is a joy to listen to.

Interesting to hear what she says about low carb and cancer towards the end of the talk bears out what I was saying in my previous post.

The talks are an hour long. There's one from Dr Davis and another from Gary Taubes but I haven't listened to those yet but they will all help you understand the importance of eating a low carbohydrate way.

Both the Taubes and the Davis talks are worth listening to.
Taubes sounds a bit dejected about the prospect of seeing any change in medical dogma.
Davis is more upbeat. Has some interesting observations on you know what. Remember when he is talking about K2 marrow bone stock is good source.

Morning all - hope it's all going well for everyone.

HC - thankss for the reciped for Tom Ketchup - must confess I've had the odd blob of no added sugar ketchup over the last week - I am famous for my love of it - once got a bottle as an extra birthday pressie:rotfl: I'll give the recipe a go.

Lady - welcome - I'm a newbie too, been reading up on low carb for a couple of months for health reasons and started properly 1st Jan. My 18 yr old DD is a "low fat obsessive" checking labels etc, but has been impressed by my initial weightloss and tempted by my early morning fry-up's:D ...she's now decided to join in. You might find your DD's want to join you when they see the benefits.

Frugalista - I don't know much about diabetes but I know the stigma attahced to low carb blinds many a health professional....but why? !

Ted - thanks for all the interesting articles - I wish I knew that cancer feeds on sugar before I lost so many people close to me, even if it just enabled more time together.

    Anyhooo - yesterday

B - fried egg, ham and cherry tomato (x2)
    L - sausage salad
D - Two sausages and cauliflower cheese

    Didin't want any snacks:A
