Low Carb Diet (atkins)

Went to see the dietician today at the local hospital (was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes ). Told her that I had been researching suitable diets (both online & bought various books on Diabetes) and had come to the conclusion that low-carb seemed to be the way to go. Her response - "Well, I think you'll find most of your sources are American"
My response "Is American diabetes different to British diabetes then??"
Came out of there feeling like a big, fat pig who has brought all this on myself, and am now disheartened and totally confused. Showed her my food diary which I have kept for the last 6 weeks - totally, cut out bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, pastry, sugar. Have eaten loads of eggs , meat and cheese (well, it was Christmas!) - and she tells me to eat toast for breakfast, sandwich for lunch and pasta, rice or potato based dinner!
Somebody please take my hand and lead me!!

aurora..take care of yourself, it's hard enough to lose family without worrying about what you are eating too. be kind to yourself. I really admire you havent just chucked it in already TBH.
frugalista- i'm no doc nor do i have experience of diabetes but surely the guide is what your blood sugars are doing? if they seem better on low carb then i would have thought that proved it suited you.

They even have a DIETICIAN MrsPugwash posting about low carbohydrate diets, I think the fact she has type 2 herself may have influenced her decision and No she doesn't work for the NHS.My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

how do you guys make your cheese sauce ?
i dont like it just made with cream - find it too claggy and creamy

Hi, Another Newbie here. Please can i join your merry band of low-carbers?
I have chosen to do the Atkins diet, i bought the book, read it thoroughly (twice-just to make sure!) and started my induction on 1st January. I discovered this thread several days ago and have read it from the start!:eek:Making notes of all the lovely recipes as i went.
What an interesting bunch you are:D
First weigh in this morning and i am delighted as i have lost 7lbs:j.
Does anyone have an opinion on low carbing as a family? i have 2 teenage daughters and as i have followed some of teds informative links, and am now far more aware of the dangers of eating a high carb diet, how do i best go about altering their diets to be more low carb friendly? iykwim.
P.s. Sorry for the essay
Anne:j

I've just had sausage, egg and bacon. *smug and full*
I read an article that says the old belief about eating later = weight gain is a myth so I'm happy to be a convert to that too.
With regard to the Ketostix, I'm on the second last dark purple measurement so all is good.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Well done you! Excellent start. I have to make seperate meals for all of us as OH was really washed out and unwell when he gave low carbing a go the last time I did Atkins. One of mine has cholesterol issues and so he has to go low fat rather than low carb so I cant really help with the family thing I'm afraid.Herman - MP for all!0

Thank you for that link Ted - have now registered.
I have asked both my doctor and my diabetes nurse about testing my blood sugars and they have both said I don't need to do that, but come in for blood tests every 3 months!! The nurse even said "Oh! You don't need to be bothering with that until you need to go on medication" I don't want to go on medication. I believe my blood test was 6.5.
By the way, my diet (although not low carb) has always been reasonably healthy - Lentils, pulses, lots of veg, wholemeal bread (max. 2 slices per day), basmati rice, home cooked meals, etc. Don't like sweets (bar 75%+ chocolate), don't drink and don't take sugar in drinks. What I'm saying is I didn't live on crappy, junk food anyway, but came away from there feeling like a total failure!
PS Have lost 9lb already just by "sort of" low carbing!!:T"Men are generally more careful of the breed(ing) of their horses and dogs than of their children" - William Penn 1644-1718
