A bit late with this I think but, yes, calcium should help with the cramps (leg cramps esp over night by any chance?) BUT you have to take calcium with magnesium as calcium alone will bung you up - the magnesium is the anticonstipator to counteract the calcium.
    Thanks for this.
I will purchase some of this along with some fibresure on Monday;)
If you think nobody cares whether you're alive or dead, try missing a couple of mortgage payments.

    My way is Atkins;)
  • The effect of a low-carbohydrate, ketogenic diet versus a low-glycemic index diet on glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus

Dietary modification led to improvements in glycemic control and medication reduction/elimination in motivated volunteers with type 2diabetes.

The diet lower in carbohydrate led to greater improvements in glycemic control, and more frequent medication reduction/elimination than the low glycemic index diet.

Lifestyle modification using low carbohydrate interventions is effective for improving and reversing type 2 diabetes.

Interesting also to see that despite the fact that the low carbers only had to keep under 20g carbs daily and were told not to restrict daily calorie intake, in fact, they lost more weight than the Low Glycemic group who were told to try to maintain a 500 calorie deficit daily.

  • Ted - as you are the forum's expert on vitamin D I wonder if you know about lard. Apparently lard is the 2nd richest source of Vit D by weight but only if from pigs that have been raised in open and exposed to sunlight. Most lard available to buy is from unhappy pigs and has been hydrogenated.

I would love to start using lard again if I could find any free range organic - does anyone know where to get it?
  • I am thinking about starting a low-carb diet on the advise of my daughter (Badger Lady) but I have a few concerns, one being that I am vegetarian and the other being the lack of fresh fruit and veggies, even for the initial 2 week period. I eat so many of them normally! I'm going to have to start liking cooked mushrooms and tofu. Also hubby keeps saying that I will never be able to stick to it because it isn't what I'm used to. Also I'm not good at the will power thing. Will I fail before I start? I have needed to loose weight for 25 years now and would really like to loose a stone before my fiftieth next year.
Vegetarian. Have cut out all high carb food. Not following any particular plan.Started 20/1/2009. Weight lost so far 29lbs. Target weight loss 38lb in total.

More Information on the benefits of free range lard here You can buy it. We have a lot of old fashioned butchers where I live and I've seen locally produced lard from rare breed pigs for sale (at a price).

I'm sure Stephan is right about the use of natural fats rather than industrially made oils and margarines.

Hiya - I'm veggie too and don't have a problem with this way of eating. You eat LOADS of veg (just not starchy ones) and fresh is much much better ;)

Which version of low carbing are you considering?

I have found Dr Dahlqvist's plan very easy to stick to, but as you see that is not a veggie plan.
This veggie low carb forum board has lots of threads that I think you would find useful.

    PS have corrected link.

  • I have just found another low carb diet site with loads of recipes and science articles. I think it is British, it is honest well written and refers to all the most recent best books.

    Unfortunate title though http://www.cake-and-biscuit-diet.com/Default.aspx

I didn't know there was more than one type of low-carb diet. My daughter has written me out a list of 'good' 'moderate' and 'naughty' foods and most fruit and veg are on the middle list. To kick-start the diet she has advised to keep to the 'good' list for 2 weeks but that includes very little fruit and veg. Perhaps it won't do any harm for 2 weeks and then include stuff from 'moderate' list? Living in France makes the fresh bit easy but the veggie bit difficult.
