  • Oh dear, just had some meatballs in tomato sauce (so much for doing the meat/eggs fast!) ah well will just try and keep my carb count especially low for a few days. Finding it difficult to eat anyway, damn illness!

I don't crave them at all

and I'm veggie, so no fridge raiders for me :(
  • Atkins-style low carb diets 'can cause memory loss' I thought I'd get my rebuttal to this piece of research in before anyone gets worried about it.

In this study participants chose their daily diets and followed particular diet guidelines for only 3 weeks, with carbohydrate intake increasing over the 3-week period. It was our goal in the present study to approximate what individuals following weight-loss diets would do during real-world conditions, and as such, our specific hypothesis and design focused on the early stages of following a restricted carbohydrate diet.

So we are talking only about the initial 3 week period when Carb intake was severely restricted. The period during which the brain is converting from using glucose and adapting to a more fat based fuel.
I appreciate that I our study participants chose their daily diets and followed particular diet guidelines for only 3 weeks, with carbohydrate intake increasing over the 3-week period. It was our goal in the present study to approximate what individuals following weight-loss diets would do during real-world conditions, and as such, our specific hypothesis and design focused on the early stages of following a restricted carbohydrate diet. didn't do an induction period so I cannot be sure how I would have felt had I totally eliminated carbs but it was after some time (3 months) I found myself thinking more clearly and generally feeling more mentally alert.
I think it is unrealistic not to expect some disturbance to brain function if you suddenly change the basis of your diet drastically. #But most people who follow Atkins find after that initial period when some report induction flu they actually feel the diet helps brain performance than otherwise.

I think it takes six months before your digestion is fully converted to low carb way of eating and you stop feeling the withdrawal symptoms of wheat/or sugar addiction. This article explains some of the dangers of grains

Bear in mind this study only used 9 people eating the low carb way. So it really isn't large enough to draw firm conclusions.

The full text doesn't give any details of the actual foods they ate. It would have been useful to know how many carbs were consumed for each of the weeks.

It is simply wrong to imply that the worsening of brain performance reported over those first 3 weeks would continue and presume the brain would not adapt and work better as ketones became a more regular part of the diet. It flies in the face of the experience of most people who change their way of eating to a low carb diet. If the same tests had been applied at 3 months and 6 months the results would, I am absolutely certain, have been totally different.

Saturday night is pizza night in our house so I tried to make the cauliflower pizza again:eek:

This is the second attemt and even though I adjusted the ingredients again, I still ended up with a soggy (definately not doey) base.:o Please can somebody post their successful recipe for the base (with approx measurements as I obviously have totally different cups to the americans:o ).
    Thanks so much,
    Newish:D

After whizzing my cauli in the processor I steamed it DRY in a sealed container in the microwave. I didn't even put a tablespoonful (edit) of water in.
