Low Carb Diet (atkins)

I've just got back from a very long weekend picking up my new car
(bargain eBay purchase). Was absolutely pooing myself along the motorway though, guess I'm still more traumatised than I realised from my little spin! But made it home in one piece after all (with a little help from a Police blockade convinced I was uninsured ).
So, as usual when away, it's been tricky finding food - I haven't exactly been on 3 square meals! Roughly:
Saturday - teacake with loadsa butter, giant samosa
Sunday - humous and chargrilled vegetables, peanut butter, smoked tofu and raspberries
I've made a decision that it's time to clear out my wardrobe... I own a vast collection of clothes (easily enough to fill four wardrobes) and 90% of it now just makes me look like a baglady. So the quality stuff is going on eBay, the rest to charity and Badger's going January sales shopping
Thanks for your supportive words; I'm hoping for a bit of progress at work tomorrow so I'll let you knowMortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
I got this link from Annika's blog this morning, It provdes some useful tips for eating a (Swedish) low carb xmas fare. But the same principles apply to our standard xmas foods.
Healthy Low carb eating the Swedish way over Christmas. The article recommends avoiding Swedish sausage, herring in syrup and Gravlax salmon. Apparently because they contain sugar? Personally, I think all but the most careful most sugar hunters can eat this for Christmas with good conscience! The sugar content would be very small in percentage after all.
Eat, instead a single firm orange (which is on the ok list) provides more sugar than if you ate the same weight of three things from above list.
Example:
Gravlax salmon: 1.9 g/100 g energy or 4 percent sugar.
Orange: 8.9g/100g energy or 83 percent sugar.
A few fruits are good for most, but I discourage a fruit orgy over Christmas. If you are concerned about weight / blood sugar it is perhaps best to refrain from the fruit barrel.
Beware of these food:
Julmust, soft drinks (worst on the list)
Beer
BREAD FLAVORED WITH WORT (containing 13% sugar)
Lusser Bullar
Gingerbread
Rice a la malta
Rice porridge, pre-purchased (containing 14% sugar)
Toffee
Saffron pancake
Candy
Light chocolate
These are good to eat:
Christmas ham (preferably fatty)
Herring
Meatballs (like homemade)
Sausage
Gravlax salmon
Lutefish with green peas
Salami
Red cabbage
Omelette with räkstuvning
Kale
Brussels sprouts
Cheese (like feta)
Almonds and nuts
Jansson's Temptation (preferably with butter and cream) - a moderate amount
Rice porridge (with plenty of cream) - a moderate amount
A dram or two Red wine / dry white wine
Lyxa to it with-little-from this list, if you want:
Mulled wine (strong gains)
Figs, dates, dried apricots
Homemade gingerbread
Lyxmarsipan
Dark chocolate
Apples
Oranges and clementinesMy weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

Hi Almar, good luck wih the plan.
I only started Thursday but I'm enjoying it so far.
Not really sure how I'm doing as I'm too scared to stand on the scales (as I'm eating so much).
I didn't make my caulilower pizza on saturday after all, as I had a call from a friend who was home for the weekend so we went out for a meal.... a chinese:rolleyes: . It was a buffet style (all you can eat ) so I stuck to the chicken satay (thinking chicken ok and peanut sauce high in protein:o ) and just picked all the meat out of all the sauces (so I got the flavour but not the sauce IYKWIM). I thought I was very good as I didn't have one grain of rice or any noodles;) . I hope I didn't do too much damage.
Yesterday I had a cooked dinner with homemade cheese sauce again and worked a night shift so took an M&S meal with me (chicken, bacon and mushroom in white wine sauce, 4.2g total... it was lovely! Thanks for the advise guys;) )
Today, I made the cauliflower pizza but (I'm not a good cook:o ) I made far too much cauli for the base (but used it anyway:rolleyes: ) so the base was a bit thick (about an inch:o ) After about an hour in the oven, I realised that this was not going to get hard..... ended up with a soft base, but it was nice. I'll try it again:rolleyes: . I just can't get the hang of the amercan measurements:p
Hope every one had a good weekend and that the ones that went away had a great timeIf you think nobody cares whether you're alive or dead, try missing a couple of mortgage payments.

Ted once again I am in awe of Annika's superior knowledge of the english language:rotfl:
I dont know whether you post these to make me laugh or they are meant to be serious because I have a right old snigger at some of their english:rotfl:
By the way I'm dying to know what Janssons Temptation is.Cos it sounds like one of those movies you get from dodgy looking shops with no windows:rotfl:
Enough of the frivolities.I've had a bad weekend as I've managed to put 2lbs on and other than a couple of voddies on Saturday night I've not cheated. So I'm assuming I am suffering from water retention due to excessive alcohol consumption:D I had a seriously bad hangover yesterday morning
Well I'll have to be a good girl for the rest of the week
By the way bought the size 12 jeans and I got into them.Had a little bit of a muffin top but nothing that a bodyshaper wont cure:D

I am overweight, diabetic and in a wheelchair which doesnt help.I am very scared about my diabetes so I am going to read this thread and the helpful links with great interest and make the necessary changes to my diet.
However you don't have to go to original research to understand everything. There are lots of good forums where people better qualified than I am share their understanding.

newish glad u are enjoying the food so much, u should of split the cauli and made 2 pizzas... i usually flip the base so that the bottom gets cooked better and makes it drier

welcome almar, i hope you enjoy joining us all. the plan is so easy really it's almost silly! i can see me eating like this on a day to day basis for life now. it's just i do slip as soon as i am out! lol
lots of you mention cauliflower rice..is this just raw grated cauli or do you have to cook it as well?

OH's birthday yesterday and though I was good food-wise there was a lot of champagne and wine flowing. My weigh day today and so I stepped on the scales this morning. I really wish I hadn't.
Hoping it's the abovementioned water retention and that it'll fall off again.0 -

i use a potato ricer and its much easier and not as messy as well as there being less blood lol, cook the cauli, bung in ricer squeeze and all the water comes out then it rices,,, easy peasy
motivation not to pig out at weekends? weigh on mondays!!!! thats what i used to do
