Thanks for the 0800 number for cancelling with Equifax I got straight through. I have just cancelled after 29 days of my free trial and there was no problem, I was not asked why I was cancelling or warned about dire consequences if I did. The person I spoke to did have annoying voice though - see Stargirl29 above! I kept having to get her to repeat things.
  • I've just managed to cancel my account using the free phone number provided above. The woman on the phone was really difficult to understand and confirmed that my account had been closed. She rambled on for about 3 or 4 minutes about their other products and services but I said I just wanted to cancel everything.

A few minutes later I get an email saying account has closed, then another email to confirm my order for 'Equifax Identify Watch Lite', which I didn't ask for. The cheeky cow on the phone had added that to my subscription without me even asking for it. So I have phoned back and got them to cancel that.

I would not ever deal with these people again and the language barrier is something I think I've been caught out with. I'd imagine I'm not the first to be caught by this, but luckily I noticed straight away what they had done. Otherwise I think I'd have been charged in 12 months time for a product I didn't even ask for. What a joke of a company. Get out while as soon as possible.

We signed up for the free credit report. To cancel your account you'll need:

    1) The order transaction number from the email confirmation you should have received when you signed up.
    2) Your confidential login/account details.

    Dial a freephone number:
    0800 1214252
worked for us but from reading this thread it's obvious they change the number regularly so check further down the thread if it doesn't work for you.

    What happened:
    - We were on hold for several minutes.
    - They were polite, they will say "you're welcome" EVERY time you say "Thank you".
    - they try all the usual tricks to get you to stay.
    - Here's the one to be careful of - they will try to put you on the 1 year free subscription - but of course we'd never remember to cancel a year later so decline that and state you want to CLOSE THE ACCOUNT COMPLETELY.

They will then do that and send you a cancellation request and confirmation emails within a few minutes.
IF you don't get the emails you have failed, do not pass go, and return to step 1 and try again.

Start to finish in around 12 minutes.

    Good luck!

They did the same to me, I asked if this would be chargeable after a year or if it would lapse without having to cancel and the woman I was talking to replied "yes".

I had to really press for an answer before she admitted I would be charged after the year was up and was most put out when I told her to cancel it now.
  • Just cancelled my account today, took just over 5minutes but did have to say no to discount offer & the free 1year alert thing.

Also, if you use skype, and call the toll-free number (0800 1214752), the call is totally FREE.

 Just spent 10 minutes on the phone, waiting and waiting and waiting while they were "trying to bring my details up". Obviously they thought I'd rang the chargeable (money-making) number.

As above I had to keep asking the strangely voiced woman to repeat herself. She ignored me when I asked to be put through to a supervisor. After asking for this at least 3 times she said she would put me on hold while she found out if one was available.

In the end I told her I was going to hang-up and to ensure that my account was canceled. Whereupon she suddenly "had my details now" - No doubt it wasn't canceled. I could take no more. Next time I'll be prepared.

    Update:
I range back. It hadn't been canceled. I told them they were not getting any money from this call as I rang the 0800 number and; surprise; surprise my account was canceled immediately with a call time of just over 1 minute.
  • I had a fairly straightforward experience - called 0800 number, got through after about 10 minutes on hold, asked for it to be cancelled, refused the 1yr thingy (although I could only tell what it was because of people posting on here), all very polite and amicable.

Droop, it sounds like you got through to a very (very) new person the first time round. I very much doubt that the call centre agents know (or care) which number you called, and they probably don't make enough on the chargeable calls to justify keeping you on the phone needlessly.

Called the freephone number 08001214752, was as you would expect trying to keep my account alive, but it wasnt a difficult experience and the lady was polite.
