Heart says independent, head says sign up to flogas for the first two years and then leave for the independent….

    Thoughts?

    We use Avanti :)
  • Have you thought about owning your own tank? <snip>

It crossed our minds but it isn't the direction that the oft wanted to take the lpg market in, so we dismissed it as it is outside the norm.

I hope (naively) that we can keep ourselves on a competitive deal by surveying the market each two years when our tie in expires.... Shame that won't coincide with the summer when being without gas for a couple of months wouldn't be an issue (not that we'd need to be without gas during a switch).

Flogas are trying to push us to a 1200L tank rather than 2000L which will hold 3 months of our winter usage but leaves me feeling that we pull be slightly exposed in a prolonged cold spell if a tanker couldn't get out to us and we happened to enter that cold spell just before the telemetry triggered an order. Mind you, still better than needing a delivery each and every 15-20 days in winter (bottles).... And the tank is only 2 metres of an eye sore rather than 3!

Flogas contract reads ok, they're happy to site the tank where we thought it would be best. 2 year fixed deal must be the way to go, calor gas couldn't get close to the pricing, and independents appear happiest dealing with pre-existing tanks, so I think that is decision made...

Anyone figured out yet how to purchase your tank from your supplier? BP, Mac and Flo gas say its not possible.
  • I looked into this one year ago. They shelter behind a law. I don't know which chapter and verse but the story goes that they are only allowed to fill cylinders into certified maintained cylinders. Nobody will maintain and take responsibility for a cylinder unless they have the exclusive contract to fill it. I asked Flo and Calor if they would enter into a maintenance only contract with me, and sell me the cylinder. They agreed to sell the (underground 2 tonne) cylinder but not maintain it!!

Apologies: the price previously shown on the graph for October was slightly off (it was a bit lower than was shown). This has now been corrected.

Here is the November graph, which as you will see has taken a sharp turn in the wrong direction :(

Just noticed a letter from Flogas (MacGas) saying that my LPG price was going up three pence per litre, then I get a delivery 3 days later and then an invoice showing 52.95 ppl. My standing charge is 16.43 pence per day and my usage is about 4000 litres per year.

It's costing me £200 per month for LPG and I live in a three bedroom house in the Scottish Highlands. I'm going to see if Calor will quote me, otherwise I'm going to start thinking about alternative fuels or looking at the system to see if it is inefficient - the boiler, for example, must be 20 years old. If I could reduce my energy costs by 30% to 50% I'd be quite happy - just don't know where to start!!

You'll save a bit by changing, but it does sound as if you'd get bigger gains by making the house more efficient. Yes, the boiler's probably nowhere near as good as it could be, but then there's all the other usual energy-saving measures... Whatever you do with the boiler and fuel, they'll pay dividends.

I too live in Scotland and was in the same dilemma as you.
You have several ways of saving considerably. I am in the final stages of renegotiating a new deal so have up to date pricing for the southern Aberdeenshire area, if you are in a remote area you may have to pay a bit extra.
1.if you are out of contract with Macgas/Flogas re-negotiate with them for a better rate or change supplier, I have been quoted rates varying from 45ppl down to 40ppl with fixed rates varying from 6 months to 1 year and caps on increases after that from 2.5p to 6p every few months. if you have just filled the tank you are in a better position to change supplier without running out of fuel during the changeover. remember you are tied into contract for 2 years so check the small print!!!!!! see previous posts from myself and others in the forum.
2.you boiler if it is over 20 years old and not a condensing boiler will be extremely inefficient, but will cost a lot to replace, check the latest government schemes for incentives, if you are on low income you may get large subsidies.
    3. a 3 bedroom house would normally expect a gas usage of 2500-3000 litres/year, so you appear to have poor insulation and very warm house combined with a inefficient boiler?
    4. Oil is apparently just as or more expensive as LPG but you will be more flexible with suppliers.

Get lots of quotes from different suppliers,, get your tank checked by any new suppliers you are considering before you sign up to avoid problems with acceptance at the last minute.

    Also Try
J Gas, Avanti Gas, Gaulds Gas, Alba gas.
see if they supply your area.
