What is this called?
When my friend was young (she is now 28), her parents gave a small amount of money (about £1) to a guy (company rep) that used to collect from their house every week. She got a lump sum at 18 - she didn't give the exact figures, but did say it was around 8k! Now with my limited mathamatic abilities :-/ I worked out that 18…

Halifax 'Monthly Saver' @ 5.30% = less than online
For the 2nd time running, Halifax plc is increasing by only 0.20% interest on its long-standing Monthly Saver a/c (not to be confused with the excellent Regular Saver), & offers only 5.30% effective Sept 1. Halifax seems uncompetitive with Derbyshire Bdg Soc's regular monthly a/c offering 5.85%. Instant access online a/c's…

Coventry – AER equal for monthly/annual interest
Effective September 1st, Coventry Building Society's online account NetSave Instant offers the same AER, no matter whether interest is paid annually or monthly. (I know some folk here prefer to see their savings grow, month-by-month – eg via trend-setters ING Direct.) The only snag is Coventry's new rate is just 4.85%…

Premos! To sell & do waht with?
I bought £20,000 of Premium Bonds last year. I didn't need the money & I liked the idea of the safe gamble. As it goes, have won about £450 in £50 increment. I always said I'd it for a year and see. The year is nearly up and I'm not sure what to do with the money. I may need it in the next 12 months for a house deposit but…

money laundering applies to tax evasion as much as it does to drugs and terrorism.

Invest or pay off debts?
I really want to invest some of my cash , but am still in debt from uni and have been told, for example, that I shouldn't bother buying shares unless I have no debt (bar my mortgage). So here's my question: is it better to just pay off my debt as soon as possible and throw all my available cash at that, or are there any…

Possibly repeatedly asked question
Not entirely sure how often this has been asked because I haven't been here before, but, I have a cheque for £5000, and basically don't know where to put it. I have an ISA which I have filled for this year, and a Barclays current account, but I have no idea where to put this money. I know it isn't a lot which limits…

Early withdrawal of childrens bonds
16 months ago I placed with Natwest a childrens bond for each of my sons at a value of £1000 fixed at 3.75% for 5 years(it seemed a reasonable rate at the time) but now the rates are rising would I be advised to close early, pay any penalty and place the funds elsewhere - and if yes where's the best place to put the boys…

£80k to Invest - suggestions please......
Over 12 months ago I sold my house and currently have just over £80k to invest. At the time, I put the money into a High Interest Savings account with HSBC. I am happy with the interest I get, but I am sure that I could be getting more from elsewhere - but where? Can anybody suggest where it could go? I want to be able to…

Setting up a 'new' direct debit with ING
As you will know, this is done by a cheque (for a nominal amount) posted to ING, and they then use the printed details to set up a direct debit from that account. However this won't happen unless you notify them you are sending your cheque beforehand! I did this with a second bank account and nothing had ocurred. But the…

About 4 years ago , I bought some egg shares- about £200 worth. They are now worth about £135 ( as a guess). What i want to know is should i sell up and get out. They have never reached their original cost and I am worried that i will just lose money if i hang on to them any longer. What do the others think? Any views much…
