Why can't I log into facebook?

IE8 worth installing?
I keep getting messages to download the newest version of IE. I like to stay up to date but having read what extras v8 has to add above v7 it seems its just a load of irritataing toolbars for messenger etc Is it worth installing and what will it really add to my browsing experience?
