What do I need to make DVDs?

I have several AVI files on my pc, which I have been able to burn to a VCD that works in my stand alone DVD player. However the resultant DVD has just one track, per AVI.
I would like to divide each track into chapters so I can jump through scenes, also I would like to have sub menus like the for instance some DVD have options to just play all the jokes from a show or all the songs one after another (I hope that makes sense).
I imagine that I will need a DVD writer as I suspect I won't be able to get enough space to do these things on a CD.
Any ideas on what sort of software I will need to do the editing? Obviously freeware would be prefered
.
TIA

You may be able to write with multiple chapters using infrarecorderUbuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

There are some excellent guides on http://www.videohelp.com/ including some which use free software.0

yes you will need a dvd burner
as for freeware, theres plenty of good stuff out there, some not as easy as the all in one packages like nero but millions of times better once you get the right combination of programs.
for the actual burning something like imgburn is good, nice simple reliable (something like 5 clicks and your burning?)
as for the avi being split into chapters then this?

ive had limited use of it but from what i know its easy, you just need the create dvd tool, not the converter rubbish with it
also supports menu creation.
cant remember what the file output type is but if possible make it .vob as this is the standard dvd file type. it should appear in a Video_TS and Audio_TS folder. you just need to select both these files in img burn and click burn.
note the audio_ts folder will appear empty but it is vital, also dont try and get rid of any files in the video_ts as on some players they are required.Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -
hi there
convertXtoDVD will convert and burn to dvd in one go, even supports joining or using multiple avi's to one dvd. takes around 30-40 mins depending on your system specs
