I'm applying for Uni to start this September and have been offered a conditional place (thankfully). But, I have been amazed to find that you can get a bursary for this and a bursary for that and a maintenance grant etc etc. I was just wondering why the Government don't put this money back into the system and make tuition…

Dole / None-working fund (yes, free money)
Students CAN get unemployment benefit (the dole) - about £40 weekly. You can only recieve it *out* of the Student loan period - even if you DO NOT recieve a student loan, because you are classed as still being eligible for a loan. So, say the loan runs out July 24th and your academic year (and loan) for the following year…

Crazy Rent Increase!
When choosing a new flat to live in for the next academic year - price is obviously a big issue. I found a flat and the landlord represenative stated that the price would be 103 odd quid a week for 2 people. We put down a reservation fee of £126 and paid the installment for the car parking space on the belief we would be…

Does anyone here know their way around the rules for which students count as gap year students and therefore don't have to pay fees? I'm totally at sea here. My son has got a deferred place for Birmingham uni for Sept 06, and I really don't want to be paying fees just for putting a tick in the wrong box on the forms...

Is the OD limit reduced immediately? 2. What's the interest charge like? 3. Is the first £500 0% which seems to be one of Smile's selling points? (Possible…

Maintenance grant/loan & WFTC
Hi, Son goes to Uni in September (hopefully!) and completely out of character I'm trying to plan ahead. Looking at the forms for student loans/maintenance etc. to try and work out how much I'll have to fund his studying (partying? !). I can't seem to find out if WFTC is counted as 'income'? Anyone know? And what about…

Student Loan charges
Have noticed several threads about banks charging unfair amounts for financial misdemeanors, i.e. exceeding overdraft, etc. My question is: Are the SLC guilty of a similar offence? In my experience the SLC make amazing blunders, like being unable to defer two loans under different numbers, paying money into the wrong loan…

Child care grant entitlement for students?
I know about the child care grant you can apply for if you are a student (instead of applying through the child tax credits system), and that you can get up to 85% of child care costs paid for. But, all I can find out is that it is for students with a 'low household income'. Does anyone have a clue at what kind of income…

Will she be a student or not???
My wife is currently a stay at home mum and is contemplating doing a course at the Open University. Is there a minimum amount of hours that someone has to study to be classed as a student? Just wandering if this will make us eligible for the 25% discount for council tax.
