Will she be a student or not???

My wife is currently a stay at home mum and is contemplating doing a course at the Open University. Is there a minimum amount of hours that someone has to study to be classed as a student?

Just wandering if this will make us eligible for the 25% discount for council tax.

i believe there is a minimum. my english dgree is 8 hours contact time but im still full time. i think it depends more on where or not the university itself counts you as 'full time' and decides to issue you with the proof of studentship to get discounted council tax.

IIRC full time is classed as 16hrs per week or more.

Iam doing two OU courses at the moment and each one is supposed to take 8 hrs study or so per week minimum, so one course may not be enough to qualify.

Best bet is to contact the OU and ask them.

I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Or contact the local council and ask them!

To get the council tax discount, you need to be classed as a 'full time student' by your institution and have a letter to confirm such status for council tax examption from them, as said above.
