higher rate taxpayer - Joint Savings Account
Hi, If I being a higher rate taxpayer and my partner being basic tax payer were to open a joint savings account, how will this account be taxed? Say for example I open a Icesave Online Savings Account which pays 6.1% and we both deposit money into this account from our salary, will this account be charged at the Higher Tax…

Best Icesave-a-like?
Due to them releasing this recent ISA, and my inability to resist transferring my money into there, I'm now going to have to transfer a lot out of my regular saver account as to not go over the FSA's regulated/guaranteed limit. So I'm after a savings account that's basically an Icesave-a-like: no catches, very simple to…

Where to put short term savings?
We've recently sold our house and are goinig into rented accomodation while we look for another to buy. Where is the best place to put a six figure sum that we will probably need in 6 - 12 months time? Is the online Northern Rock a/c paying 6.49% a safe bet with the government guaranteeing the full amount? Any suggestions?

Interest rate fallacy?
It's just occurred to me that when interest rates go up or down in line with the Bank of England rate (say) they invariably go up/down across all accounts by the same amount (e.g. 0.25%) and that's considered a 'good' thing by all and sundry. Now what if you already have a very low rate? So low, in fact, that's it's…

Invest for the future, or clear your mortgage ?
I have often wondered what people consider to be more important / a btter thing to do with their spare 'investible' money at the end of the month. On the one hand, mortgage interest is usually at a low(ish) rate and isn't expensive borrowing, on the other hand, making sizeable profits from S&S investing is (according to…

My local building society, the Ipswich Building Society, is aligned with Liverpool Victoria and sent one of their advisors around to see what I could do with my finances. Old Premium Bonds?
Hello all. I have some Premium Bonds dating from the 1950's. My question is, does "Ernie" still have these early numbers in the database, as in all this time I have not had a win (I know the odds of a win). I just get the feeling that these early numbers have been lost in the sands of time. Thanks, Chris.
