Childrens Savings Advice Sought
I'm looking to maximise my childrens savings and am seeking some advice. My daughter has a Monthly Saver account with Halifax in her name. The balance is £3500, £50 is paid in a month, the account pays 3.80% but there is a bonus as well (dependant on withdrawals, none made, a total of £149 was added to the balance last…

Expat savings account suggestions?
I'm trying to advise a friend who has £120K he wants to put in a savings account. The trouble is he has dual British/French nationality, lives in France, and he doesn't have a UK address. This, presumably, is going to trip up the address checks applied by the usual savings account providers. He wants to keep the money in…

How Safe are the UK Building societies
In light of the US Sub-Prime Mortgage crisis and the problems this is causing to financial institutions in the US. How safe is our money invested in savings accounts in the UK? Surely they have been applying similar lending criteria - Are any of the UK Building Societies likely to be in danger of folding?

Share strategies?
Obviously not expecting people to share their specific tips n tricks (well unless you're feeling generous), but other than me simply Googling and looking at the guides Fool etc. does anyone have any decent links on how to select shares? As with funds I'm talking "dabble" levels of money, but I'd quite like some sort of…

16+ Fixed Rate Savings Bonds
I'd be appreciative if any of you can direct me towards some high interest fixed rate savings bonds. I have checked some already but quite a few are for 18+ and unfortunately Loughborough BS has stopped their 6.71% 16+ bond due to oversubscription. Sterling v. Euro, after UK catastrophe
Hi. We are both retired & travel around Europe in a motorhome. We have a small house in Portugal as a base if required, but no UK property anymore. We are comfortable because we live a simple (& cheap!) life which is not allowed in the UK, but we are far from rich & thus I think vulnerable. We have a few shares, but mostly…

How safe are some of these savings accounts?
Hi all, I hadn't given much thought to this until the debt crisis hit the financial markets a few weeks ago but I have an ice save account and was wondering what (if any) are the risks in having my money in this account (although I assume that the same question could be directed towards HiSave et al)? What could…

fixed-rate bonds - 6.70 per cent the peak?
just wanted people's view if you don't mind on whether folk here think 6.70 is the peak for fixed-rate bonds - for this year and maybe even several years (after all, unlikely that rates will rise even further in 2008?). It's getting increasingly difficult to even achieve 6.70 at the moment - many of these have been…

which savings plan?
Hi, I want to invest up to £500/month for my children (need 2 accounts) but the accounts need to be easily accessible for withdrawals, just in case....so an ISA is not appropriate and my monthly amount may vary. I would hope that they would be long term investments, but cannot guarantee it. Who has the best savings plan at…

$4.5 billion options bet on a catastrophe within 4 weeks
Sunday, August 26, 2007 An anonymous investor has placed a bet on an index of Europe's top 50 stocks falling by a third by the end of September, as world equity markets plunged for a third day and volatility hit a three-year high. This is an enormous and dangerous stock option activity. If it goes right, the guy makes…

Hi everyone, I've been a student for the past 4 years and thus I have been entitled to receiving gross interest rates in my bank accounts. I am about to start working next month and I will be a tax payer, thus I will need to start paying tax on my interest. Should I keep silent, or do I need to inform my bank that I should…
