Obviously not expecting people to share their specific tips n tricks (well unless you're feeling generous), but other than me simply Googling and looking at the guides Fool etc. does anyone have any decent links on how to select shares?
As with funds I'm talking "dabble" levels of money, but I'd quite like some sort of plan rather than cross my fingers and hope.

The Fool's a good place to start. Have you looked at the boards there? This is the best one for getting a general feel for investment IMO though it's now sadly defunct.
There is also Incademy, which gives a basic grounding, including strategies.
FWIW, I like smaller companies , value investing, dividend payers ( the HYP ), oilies and investment trusts.0
