Old-style 1923
I've just added to my collection of Mrs Beeton books. In the 1923 edition the author (not Mrs Beeton, she died in 1865!!) begins to imagine what a truly labour-saving house would be like (this was a time when, following the 1st World War, servants were in short supply and women who previously might have had servants were…

Bakeware/Kitchenware Advice
Bit of a lurker on this board, but think this is the most appropriate place for this thread. I am looking to purchase all-new bakeware/kitchenware, things like baking trays, casserole dishes, frying pans, wooden spoons, etc. I can get basic stuff in the supermarkets for a few pounds, but do they last? I am willing to pay a…

Mould on Kitchen Window Blind
I have a window above the kitchen sink, and it doesn't seem to matter what I have there...curtains or roller blinds, they always end up getting mould/damp stains on them that won't wash out. Any ideas as to what I could use on this window???

Curtains difficult to pull on a couple of curtain poles
My style is that I have wooden curtain poles with wooden curtain rings on and that my curtains hang from those wooden curtain rings. No problem back with ones in last house and no problem with some of them in current house BUT I have two different style/slightly wider than I've used before curtain poles in one room and the…

Christmas Dinner - No cooker/oven
I have been a long time fan of this forum but this is my first time at asking a question. We have no cooker/oven this year as we live in rented accommodation and cooker is not landlord's so we are managing with slow cooker and microwave. I manage ok for everyday meals but I am concerned about Christmas as there will be 6…

Condensation and damp
I'm fairly new to this problem. For most of my life I've eitheir lived abroad or in UK in very old drafty houses, none of them ever seemed to have problems with condensation. The last few years though we've been living in modern houses and they all seem to have the same problems. Some rooms have water dripping down the…

Use by date?
Argh, really annoyed with myself - have a pack of unopened frankfurter style sausages in the fridge which I thought had ages on their date still - now I look and it seems they have a use by of end of Oct. My own fault for not checking but I assumed as they were vacuum sealed, they'd be good for a while. Would anyone brave…

Storage/stand for Panasonic NIW920 steam iron?
Our (any, any, any ...) old steam iron got replaced with the subject one, but the new one is quite big and just about fits precariously in our existing iron storage stand against a wall under our stairs. I'm looking for a suitable replacement storage stand where we can store the new iron away, preferably safely even while…

Leftover box in the freezer ?
I was talking to an elderly neighbour the other day who told me that she never throws food away and that any leftovers go into a box in her freezer. When it's full, she puts the contents in a pan, adds stock and boils it up into a soup, which she reckons is delicious. I hate wasting food but I don't want to eat all the…

John Lewis bed linen
I've always bought my bed linen at JL and have always been very pleased with quality and lasts for years. It's time for me to stock up on basics (pillowcases, sheets). Has anyone bought these items recently and could comment on whether their quality is still good? (Heard the odd story of things being not quite as good a…

'Black Friday' Money Saving offers
My email In Box is being overwhelmed with 'Black Friday' money off marketing offers. I wonder how many people are being persuaded to spend money they can't afford on items they don't really need just because the prices are being reduced? I don't recall this kind of marketing being so intense in previous years. Another…

spiced beef
Hello all, wanted to ask the wise ones here about spiced beef. I have often made it at Xmas, haven't for a couple of years, but had lost my recipe. I went on to Delia on-line (whose recipe I know I had used) and the BBC. Nothing. I'm not looking for a recipe, as I got my sister to send hers. But it set me thinking - has…
