Condensation and damp

I'm fairly new to this problem. For most of my life I've eitheir lived abroad or in UK in very old drafty houses, none of them ever seemed to have problems with condensation. The last few years though we've been living in modern houses and they all seem to have the same problems. Some rooms have water dripping down the wall, leading to damp and black mold. Basically it seems in a modern house unless you have the heating up to tropical levels to dry it out, it just gets damp. I mentioned this to our property inspector (we rent) as I was fed up with having to bleach the mold off windows every other month. He showed me the little vents at the top of the window that could be snapped open, and also told us to leave the windows open a tiny crack at night so all the condensation can escape (our windows have a feature they can be locked and actually appear shut, but have a tiny crack to ventilate). Yes it means the house is colder at night but since we've been following his advice - no condensation. The tip about the windows seemed such a revelation to me, I wondered if it would help anyone else.
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!
