Hi everyone. This is the first time I have posted so not not sure if this will appear in the right place?! I am desperately searching for Lovells Milky Lunch Bars or a recipe to make my own variation for an 80th Birthday present for my Grandad, as I want to make up a candy bouquet. However I cannot find either anywhere....…

Mould in bathroom
I read somewhere about using white vinegar to kill mould, can someone tell me if this is like cooking vineagar or a special concentrated one? And if yes, where can I get it from? We have used bleach in the past and it's effective, but asthma sufferer in house does not get on with the lingering bleach fumes. Grateful for…

Can I use single cream in a cheesecake instead of double cream??
Apologies if this is posted in the wrong place! I have a cheesecake recipe that I have followed religiously and it has never failed me! I have gone to make it today and discovered that OH has bought single cream instead of double cream  Can I use this as a subsitute? I can post the recipe if that helps/makes a…

Best deep frying thermometer?
Basically, as the title says, I've been finding it hard to get the right temperature in the chip pan. Using different volumes of oil and sized gas burners at different times makes it hard to judge just how long before I'm ready to fry. So, I hope a thermometer will solve it, but which one to get? A lot of them look fiddly…

Kitchen Aid - is it worth it?
Recently I've been considering purchasing a Kitchen Aid mixer (probably the classic one) I bake regularly and intend to make bread and make biscuits instead of buying. I hate making pastry due to the mess but I think I would make it in a Kitchen Aid. I've read a few times that they last a lifetime so I can justify the cost…

HM Wine
Quick question, HM wine from many years ago has been found. It needs opening and filtering. If it has turned to vinegar is there any reason I couldn't use it like a white wine vinegar? Wouldn't want it to go to waste if it could be used, even if it has gone off. On the other hand wouldn't want to poison people. Thanks.

self cleaning oven
An odd question, but how do you know if your oven is a self cleaning oven? We live in a rented house. Retired lady owns it and the house was immaculate when we first moved in. We will be moving to a bigger place in a few months I and want to get house shipshape. I wipe down the oven, and it's not really grotty though the…

Dried out sultanas - can they be revived?
Stupidly, I didn't seal my bag of sultanas properly last time I used them and they have dried out. They are still in date. Can I soak them in something to revive them?

Cotton poplin
Can anyone tell me what cotton poplin fabric is like please? I've spotted a design I like online but they don't do samples. I want to make a kitchen blind and (unlined) curtains for under the work tops to hide washing machine and cupboard with no door so would this be suitable? I am very broke at the moment and can't…

The art and practice of laundry work
I have a wonderful old book by the above title. As my washing machine has died I thought I'd dig the book out and look for hints and tips on handwashing. It's a fascinating read and was awarded to Lily Snow, in 1911 for attendance at a course of instruction in laundry work in Leyton. It's extraordinary that a whole book…

Does arborio rice keep indefinitely?
It's been in a glass jar and looks fine. Will it be OK when cooked or will it perhaps not soften as it should? Don't want to risk it if there is a chance it will end up like gunshot pellets.

Jubilee cake anyone?
Is anyone else planning to make one? I've been googling recipes and looking at images and settled on a recipe from BBC Good Food site: http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/2325/jubilee-cake but with a union jack top like this: http://uk.lifestyle.yahoo.com/jubilee-cake-095813139.html and in a square tin.

Alternatives to Flylady "shop" items?
I love reading the Flylady threads on here and I also subscribe to the original Flylady websites which I get several emails from daily. The emails all rave about the Flylady shop items - purple rags / water bottles / rubba scrubbas etc. However they are quite pricey and add in shipping costs they dont end up being very…

Searching for Elizabeth David recipe from her 'Summer Cooking'
I have lost my copy of her 'Summer Cooking' and I am searching for a recipe I think was in there. It is for a very simple hazelnut cake (sort of gooey and meringuey), which you sandwich together with raspberries and cream. Lovely ! It was a simple recipe which made a small cake. I have looked online but recipes on there…
