Hertz - option to return empty tank - good or bad deal
hired a car from Hertz, they asked if i wanted to return the car empty and pay a reduced priced per litre to refuel. As it's difficult to know how much fuel, I can't see this being for the benefit of the customer. Has anybody worked this out or is it only for business expense types.

How often should I get my car serviced?
I was always told you should get your car serviced every year, but a friend today says not. They say a car only needs servicing after "a certain number of miles"!! I do about 8000 miles a year and I drive a newish Seat. What do people think? Once a year or less often? I'm hoping you will say less often as that will save me…

Owning two cars with NCB's - what's best to do?
My partner has just put a deposit on a new (used) car and is collecting it later this week. His old car is currently parked off road, until he sells it for parts or scraps it. He has 6 years NCB's with the old car. The policy ends in just a few weeks so, annoyingly, if he cancels it now, he will lose the extra year. He's…

eBay advert
What am I missing with these adverts? There is no way this car should be that cheap, there are also lots of others from the same seller, and some from different sellers markedly below value. The seller Id is different on some but the description is the same. Do they say the price is an error when you contact them or what?…

Beware - servicing stop
My car was booked in for a full service. My sump was damaged by their mechanics who cross threaded the sump plug. I was charged loads of extra money for parts and labour to fit a new sump. Which was never actually fitted. The car was returned to me and overnight left a huge oil patch on the drive leaking onto the pavement…

Part 36 settlement for personal injury?
Hi just need some advice on this matter. I had a car accident last year in July and the case is still open. It's been disputed by third party. My car was hit from behind by a van basically. Luckily I took pics of the incident. I provided all these to my solicitor alongside witness statements from 2 people who stopped to…

Scrape in Tesco car park
Confession time. My wife (no really) pulled our large 4X4 into a small space in Tesco car park today and caught the wing mirror and scraped the door of the car next to her. She then had a total panic moment and drove away. She knows she should have stopped and is now sat at home literally shaking and sweating with worry.…

Car Service Plan - Aye or Nay (or stick with local garage).
Hi all I have just bought a 1 year old Mk5 Ford Mondeo (2L Diesel) from a main Ford Dealer. Its done 12.5k and has just been serviced by said dealer. I have been offered a "pay up front service plan" and am looking for advice as to whether I should go with it or stick with my local garage. The best value plan appears to be…

Hi I was hoping for a little bit of advice I called the breakdown service out on Thursday morning who came and said I needed a new coil as injector 3 was showing as a fault so I paid the £87 as requested part fitted and on my way less than 3 hours later the car was having the same issues as earlier I called the AA out…

Suspension sign lawful?
I received a dreaded fine for parking in a bay with a suspension board. The sign was not on my side of the road but opposite and appeared to be an A3 notice indicating no parking outside a specific property which did not relate to the bay I was in. After picking up a ticket, I later discovered that the one notice was in…

Quote seem good for brakes?
£63 for parts and fitting for rear brake pads? Well the word was shoes they say that's what it takes. 05 focus. Seemed rather cheap and I was wondering if I missed something. Friend had her back brakes done at the same place last month on a 13 fiesta and it cost almost £200. My car has started grinding (not squeaking?),…

Part exchange questions
My Dad is going to be buying a new car soon, and I am going to buy his car off him. It would make the whole process significantly easier if we could part exchange my car in for the new one he buys. But there are a few issues: 1) my car is obviously registered to me, not him. Does that matter? Will garages say the part ex…

Manufacturer warranty due to expire but car isn't running well
So the manufacturer warranty is due to expire on my car in November. Everything ran well up until last month when the car wouldn't go over 20mph and several lights came on. The VW group roadside assistance came and changed the throttle valve and problem solved, or so I thought. Two days ago, I had the same issue and the…

Traffic gridlock in West London on A4
I drove from west London to Hertfordshire yesterday. This was a journey I used to do regularly until a few years ago. It used to take 1 and a 1/14 to 1 and 1/2 hours depending on traffic, in the rush hour. Yesterday I had to travel from West London to Ayelsbury. My route takes me over the A4 (Great West Road) to the M4…

Bought a car for too much then it was stolen!
Hi everyone I've come on here for some advice, please. I bought a car last Thursday (15th Sep) and paid in full for it on my credit card (£1400 + £200 warranty). They serviced, MOT'd it and fitted a new battery and I was supposed to be picking it up on Monday but it wasn't ready due to an issue with the keys so I picked it…

Previous Insurance Claim
Just a quick one really. Getting quotes for new car insurance and I have had a previous claim a couple of years ago, but I can't remember the exact date of the accident (not 100% sure of the month as well). Is there anyway I can find out about an exact date of a previous claim or can I just approximate it when buying new…

AA van backed into my car in queue at traffic lights
I was sitting in a traffic queue at the lights around 10 days ago behind an AA VW van. In front of the AA van, at the red lights at the front of the queue, was a car. The lights changed and the car did not move off. After a couple of minutes the owner of the stalled car, opened their passenger door and the passenger waved…
