Alternator woes
Right, Bought a reconditioned alternator from GSF (gave in old one for recon) for my 3 series. Fitted it and and 2 months later it packed up. Had to buy another one from them while the original was sent off to be tested. It was faulty, so they refunded the price of the second one. Fitted the new one and 4 months later, it…

Second hand car from dealer failed after 3 months...
I bought my wife a car from a local dealer just over 3 months ago now, paid £1800. It started playing up a few weeks back stalling at lights etc. The dealer had packed up when I popped it back within the 3 month warranty and all that was left was an empty lot. I took it to a mechanic friend who thought it could be a fuel…

Auction Help For Honda Civic Please
Hi All I'm looking to pick up a Honda Civic, 2007-8, preferably less than 80k miles, FDSH, 1.8 Petrol or 2.2 Diesel. Was thinking of auctions and wondered if anyone had any idea of any sold prices for these or anywhere else good to look for a decent one at a good price! Also does anyone know of any online car auctions for…

Breakdown Cover
I've just got my RAC renewal through, and they want to put the cost up to £19.00 per month. Suffice to say I'm not happy with that, but the cover is the best one they offer. I *do* get breakdown cover with First Directory, but I am aware that a lot of the policies that come with paid-for bank accounts aren't really worth…

Experience with Insurethebox car insurance renewal quotes?
Hiya, Got a good quote from Insurethebox (£870 to insure a 2,5 TD5 G4 Defender) - even though it is a telematics insurance. This all sounds fair but I have not been able to find too much about how the renewal quotes were after one year of monitored driving. I am driving since 20 years - quite safe driver. The only thing is…

This could be interesting, and worth a look. The first in the 6 part series is to focus on road rage. Very impatient people losing their temper.

Car Service
Sorry if I'm being dense, but I can't seem to find any information about getting a cheap (or just reasonably priced) car service. What I need to figure out is roughly how much it should cost to get my 6 year old Toyota Yaris serviced. It just passed the MOT and before that it had a new fan belt and water pump (after…

Recommend me good tiedowns to strap box onto roof rack
Box will have stubby fit purpose fitted to align before and after the front and rear bars (respectively). But need a good brand of tie downs to strap the box down to the rack to avoid it flying everywhere. Dont want to risk it for cheap, but at the same time looking for something value for money.

Any way of checking if a car is a grey import?
Hope someone can advise. I'm interested in buying a used car and have learned there was huge majority of these that were imported at some point. Is there any way of telling if the particular car I'd like to buy is an imported vehicle as my insurance company won't insure if it is? Thanks F x

Exhaust advice
A friend of mine has just had her catalytic convertor and mid section of her exhaust replaced. The back box was not changed as this was already replaced a year or so ago. I've been in the car the new set up doesnt sound good. With the car idling I put my hand over the tail pipe and I could leave it there quite easily. No…

Accident spammers using DVLA phone number
Just wanted to post about a new (to me anyway) twist on spam motor accident calls. Somebody claiming to be from DSA, now part of DVLA he says, calls. He wants to know about the no blame accident I had in the last 3 years so he could update my driving licence records. He says it was an accident involving a pedestrian.…

Diesels in town
Quick question. The generally accepted wisdom on here is that if you do mainly town driving, a diesel is a bad idea, due to problems with the DPF. So how come buses and taxis ( especially black cabs ) are usually diesel, when they spend their whole life in towns ? Do they not have a DPF ? If not, why not ?
