help personal number plate

we traded in our car with our personal number plate on it, stupid as were , we believed the garage that they would sort it out as the car we bought had their fathers number plate on it, anyway, they have transferred their number plate, and now have disappeared, closed down and hang up when we call, dvla have said take car off road and apply for the original number plate for our car, but how can we get our personal number plate back, its all our own fault

If the car has gone and you have sent the documents off also then its gone.

You may be able to trace the new owner and see if they will release it.

Unfortunately you never owned the number plate, you only owned the right to the number plate.

Transferring the vehicle also transferred the rights to the new owner.

Did you have anything in writing that the plate would be retained? If so, then you should have a case against them for either the plate or the value of it. If the garage was a limited company, then your claim is against the limited company - and that probably won't go anywhere, by the sound of it.

If you don't have anything in writing, then you sold them the car complete with the plate.

Unless it was a high value plate, the hassle you will have to end up not getting it back, might be just as well to buy another.
