Car Service

Options
Sorry if I'm being dense, but I can't seem to find any information about getting a cheap (or just reasonably priced) car service.

 What I need to figure out is roughly how much it should cost to get my 6 year old Toyota Yaris serviced. It just passed the MOT and before that it had a new fan belt and water pump (after breaking down on the way to Dublin). But now it's making an interesting noise when I accelerate (but not all the time) that I seem to remember from some time previously, so it's definitely time to get it serviced.

For the first 3 years of it's life it was serviced by the dealer, then year 4 a local mechanic in England (can't remember what I paid), and year 5 a friend did it at mates rate. So I'm a bit clueless. I'm now living near Belfast if anyone wants to recommend a reputable mechanic!

Owning a car is a headache - why do we do it??

As for why do we do it? Necessary Evil I suppose!!

As for the servicing i'm not a Toyota buff, but for most petrol cars, an annual service will probably include:

    Oil Change
    Oil Filter Change
    Spark Plug Change
    Air Filter Change
Fuel Filter Change (If it can be changed)

Depending on the milage of the car, it may also be due the following:

Timing belt change, but this may be a chain driven engine IIRC.
    Gearbox Oil
    Brake Fluid
    Coolant Change

Your owners manual may give the service intervals for these items, if not, there will be an owners club website with more information on it than you could possible need.

As for the noise under accelleration, if it is the same noise as when the fan belt went previously, then it might well be the culprit, but i'm not going to diagnose your car from my keyboard.

The best thing to do is ask around for recomendations for a good garage. Try to avoid the QuiK-Fit type places, as they aren't great for much especially fault diagnosis. And i can almost guarentee they will tell you that you need a new set of brake pads and disks.

Toyota quote £255 for a major full+ service. I would have thought that was a pretty reasonable price when you see what's included.

£255 sounds not bad at all to me.

    But check here for alternatives:

Get the noise checked out first, then worry about the service.
